Many moons ago, I mentioned that I met a wonderfully nice gentleman from New Zealand and that he promised to send me my own jar of vegemite. I got it in the mail yesterday and was so excited that I could hardly contain myself to wait for a slice of toast, so I dipped in my finger to have a taste. It was as good as I remembered when I first tried it; my husband, however, says it smells like roadkill and won't go near it. I gave a taste to my mother tonight and she even like it.

But my main question is this: besides spread on toast, how else is this eaten? And does it have to be refrigerated? I went through some back posts and someone mentioned it was good with soapy cheese but not good with tasty cheese. Please explain soapy and tasty. What is the American equivalent? Any and all ideas are appreciated.

Vegemite, ah, Aussie revenge!
Vegemite is best eaten, like you said, on toast, or sandwiches. Many people enjoy it with cheese and even lettuce (on sandwiches). I've never been one to mix my Vegemite, I like it in it's purest form! lol!
You can get pre-mixed Vegemite and Cheese in Australia, in the form of Cheese Sticks and also Crackers!
By the way, there is a move Down Under to buy Vegemite back from food giant Kraft (American) - Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi!
ClaraSue please enjoy every last morsel of your jar of Vegemite, it is very, very, good for you and your husband must have malfunctioning olfactory nerves (or something like that), has he actually smelt roadkill, and if so, how many days after the event? He must be thinking of Marmite! lol, lol, lol!

Don't be so rude about such a superior product.

Since (she reluctantly admits) a slight similarity in the two products, even if Vegemite is the vastly inferior imitation, I would suggest you keep it pure, just on its own spread on bread and butter or on toast. I have been known to add a spoonful to boiling water and drink it, you can also add some to casseroles and stews but I have never tried that.

Marmite forever!

ClaraSue toast some crumpets, smother them in butter then spread Vegemite sparingly on. That`s my favorite way to enjoy Vegemite. Another way to enjoy that yeast extract taste is to make a sandwich of crispbreads,I use vitaweats and squeeze them together gently to produce Vegemite and butter "worms".

ClaraSue, I'm the one who mentioned soapy cheese. I'll try to explain........Soapy cheese is what I call processed cheese, it is usually sold in packets of slices. I don't know about the US but in Canada this cheese was a bright orange colour. What I call cheddar is a hard cheese with a bit of taste as opposed to the slices which don't have much at all, hence the name soapy cheese.
Hope this clears things up a bit for you.

I haven't had Vegemite worms in years - must buy some Vitaweats and have a go - they're the best fun, for grown ups, that is!

Vegemite and marmite are two similar products which the Aussies and Brits are respectively crazy about, almost to militant levels! (Or so I gather from the bitter battles that rage on this site over which of the two is superior...) I've never tasted either, and am quite eager to learn how they taste.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Blinkybill: that's pretty much what I had figured out re: the cheeses. Thanks for the clarification.

But I still need to know for sure about refrigeration. It doesn't say on the jar, and I'd hate for something like this that I've been waiting for so long to go bad. And if it doesn't need to be, will it hurt for it to be in the cooler?

Clara, no need for refrigeration at all. My jar is just kept in the kitchen cupboard. If you wish to keep it in the cooler, that is fine, too.

Also, it will not spoil with age, so you can disregard any use-by dates..

Well said ozzz2002, bacteria wouldn't stand a chance!

ClaraSue if you hadn't liked it you could always use it as axle grease.

All my daughter's friends like my Spaghetti Bolognese. When they stay for dinner, that's the usual requested meal. They don't know the secret ingredient is the Vegemite!

As to the love it or hate it, some of the Marmite jars have I Hate Marmite on them.
