I do believe a new era has just started in the Middle East. Any thoughts?

BBC story

Who knows when he died, bit cynical about that, but if it really was just a couple hours ago then I bet he was happy they had already started digging the grave.

Though I`m not sorry to see him dead when I first heard the news "Arafat Is Dead" I was instantly reminded of a line from the movie Cleopatra. "Antony is dead? You say that as if it were a everyday occurrence. The soup is hot, the soup is cold. Antony is alive, Antony is dead. SHAKE WITH TERROR if those words are TRUE! The dying of such a man must be SHOUTED! SCREAMED! ANTONY IS DEAD!!!"
The impact Arafat had on his people, the middle east and the world in general will be remembered for generations. I don`t think his life will be just be a footnote in history books in years to come for many people.
Part of one other quote also comes to mind[ it`s falsely attributed to Caesar and Shakespeare] it does seem apt to me when when thinking about Arafat and his actions and deliberate non-actions. "Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind."

They announced the passing of Arafat on the radio in a most unceremonious way here, simply stating that "Arafat has bought it!" - I personally thought that was terrible, he was after all, no matter the politics, a world leader!

And so was Hitler.

Arafat was a two-faced murderer who held a suicide belt in one hand and an olive branch tipped with cyanide in the other. Maybe now that he is dead, the peace process can be restarted. I doubt it, because thanks to him, there is no clear successor. Probably one of the dominant terrorist organizations like Hamas will take over, and their attitude will be drive Israel into the sea. And I am still so amazed by the world’s obsession with Israel. I was watching the BBC last night and saw a broadcast about the atrocities accusing in Darfur. Ironically, the broadcast was cut off, in order to announce to the world that Yasir Arafat was dead. They then spent the next twenty minutes going over it.

What an interesting title you chose for Arafat....

What, Arafat was a Rastafarian...?

Or are you comparing him to the original Lion of Judah, King David?
Whatever your politics, I think it's a pretty absurd title to apply to a Palestinian terrorist. And no, I'm not pro-Israeli either; I'm not trying to stir anything up--just commenting on what an odd name that is to give to Arafat.

Ok, I'll shut up now.

You must have some sympathy for Israel. After all, you have correctly noted that Monsienger Arafat is a terrorist.

I have sympathy for Israel. I also have sympathy for Palestine. I also disapprove of many actions of both. I hope that Arafat's death will open doors for the peace process, but I fear that is unlikely.

Sadly, some of the worst leaders are also some of the best. I think we can all agree that Hitler had few redeeming qualities, but it is also true that some of the progresses he made for Germany still survive. Arafat will probably be thought of similarly.

I have sympathy for the people of Israel, and for the people of Palestine. I have little sympathy for governments, be they run by elected officials, dictators, monarchs, whatever.
I have no sympathy for leaders who shake hands with their enemy one day and allow them to be blown up the next.

You sound like an anarchist. I'm not saying that that's a bad thing.

Hehheh...no, not an anarchist. I am, however, an Aquarius. Pretty close to the same thing.

Arafat was a president of a non existant country but a leader nonetheless and for world leaders not to mention his name or show regret at his passing brings ignomy on those concerned.Shame on Presidents Ariel Sharon and G.W.Bush.

Exactly what G.W.BUSH did in the last election, having said that if it were not for the actions of Arafat the plight of the Palestine people would have gone unnoticed by the rest of the world.
Firstly betrayal by the British, pressure from the Americans, and then occupation by the Jews,a country that had been in existence for over a thousand years has now all but disappeared

Shame for what. For recognizing what kind of man Arafat truly was. Do you think anyone mourned Hitler's death, besides the anti-semites, Neo-Nazis ect. How about all the other murderous dictators. By ignoring his death, both of those leaders are telling everybody that they did not consider him a leader, and I tend to agree.

Ariel Sharon simply echoes the will of his people. If someone got on the "J" bus you take to work, and blew it up, I think your view of Arafat and his supporters would change.

As for Dubya, his stand on terrorism is very well documented. Besides, Israel will always be number one to the US, I don't care who they fight with.

My point is, Shivrats, that Democrat or Republican, a US government will always take Israel's side, rightly or wrongly.

But of course the arabs are not going to suffer from another nation trying to exterminate them,to erase the arab race from the face of the earth, as the arabs would like to do to the Israelis.
The fact that many world leaders are happy (more than a few celebration drinks would have been drunk when the news was announced) that a terrorist leader is dead should not surprise or outrage anyone.Lol, like that`s amazing news to anyone?
Of course I do comment as one that supports Israel one hundred percent, but then I always support the underdog, not the mad dog. Perhaps that`s yet one more reason I`m not sad he is dead.
