I have finished reading it and although it's not the best fantasy book I've read, it's worth checking out.
I think Paolini's writing improves as we read on and will probably be even better in the next books in the trilogy (he started writing "Eragon" when he was 15).
Whilst I was reading this I found echoes of other novels such as "The Lord of the Rings" especially with the names and creatures (human, dwarves, elves, urgals etc.) The urgals were remarkably like the orcs and uruk-hai.
There were also echoes of "Dragonkeeper", a children's book by Carole Wilkinson. Because I read "Dragonkeeper" before "Eragon" it felt as if Paolini had copied one part from it exactly but I don't think that's true - both books were published in the same year.
I tried to put the similarities behind me and just read the story on it's own and that was made easier as there are also original aspects to the story.
If you like fantasy-adventure stories then I expect you would like this story. Although it's not top-notch writing it is intriguing and makes you want to find out what will happen next, which is good since it is a series. The characters are well written and the relationships and friendships of the character's are believable. After I read it I think I rated it ***1/2 stars out of 5.
