Is the saying "Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in morning, sailor's warning" true? or is it a wives tale?

Here we say "Red sky at night, shepherd's delight. Red sky in the morning shepherd's warning". I know nothing of old wives.

Here is a site with some scientific words on this old saying:

Not sure about it being scientifically proven to be true, but personal experience would lead me towards believing the old adage. Watch for it yourselves, and see how often it holds true.

I've remembered the saying as Teabreak remembers it. I haven't had an opportunity to verify it's authenticity since I live in a landlocked state.
What happens when there is a red sky at night and in the morning?

My Great Uncle was a sailor and I believe the saying is true, also, it is adaptable for shepherds too!

We use shepherds and sailors for the rhyme in our area. Maybe because we live within striking distance of the coast, yet have fields around us with sheep in (never seen a Shepherd in any of them though).

Red sky at night,
Shepherd's delight;
Red sky in the morning,
Sailor's warning.

...or was it the other way round . Whatever, the rhyme tends to hold true.
