In light of the recent disaster in Asia,I was astonished to learn that only Norway,Denmark,Sweden and the netherlands have keep to the agreement made to the UNITED NATIONS that 0.7% of GDP would be set aside for humanitarian aid.The richest countries in the world should be ashamed of themselves http://www.unicef.org/pon96/inlowest.htm

Were you really astonished? Really? That doesnt surprise me at all. Hard to justify spending nearly 1% of GDP on humanitarian aid when you have countries to liberate.

Yes, after all, "instigating democracy" is an expensive job.

I read about this and there is an explanation as to why many countries aren't giving that much:
- Many have their own aid programs. - Many were concerned in light of some recent scandals involving missing money and misappropriation of funds, they didn't want to go through a 'third party'.

$40 Million is what The Times of India reported.

The inauguration is privately funded. For the record, I admit the United States in general and President Bush in particular are responsible for this tsunami. GWB is also responsible for the recent deaths of Artie Shaw and Jerry Orbach. I have no idea how he killed them but Artie Shaw was 95 and he never died before. It must have been Bush. If William Jefferson Clinton were still President he would have walked out on the ocean and calmed the waters.

okay, something has to be said. I'm not a huge fan of AMerica or George Bush and I often thought of myself as cynical at times, but you, CWM, take the cake. It's great that countries can donate what they can but why should they do without things that they normally do? A donation is just that - a gift that doesn't infringe on thier own lives.

For the record, the figure is now at $350 million. While I am not a big fan of our government, I don't think that absolutely everything it says is a lie. And I happen to have believed them when they said all along that the $35 million was a preliminary figure, to be adjusted when they knew more about what was needed. Really, the USA may not be the best place in the world, but the America bashing really does get tiresome after awhile. We are not Satan incarnate. There are lots of other things to talk about, ya know.

I guess it is now time for all the apologies to start coming in. For all those who pre-judged America, saying how terrible it was that we were spending $40 mil on the inaguration and $35 mil on the tradegy, I'd like to hear something. Of course I won't hear an apology. People will say that its true that America is spending 350 MILLION DOLLARS, but then they'll bring up Iraq, and show how America is still a terrible country. Damned if you do and damned if you don't, so why bother?

My apologies here for pre-judging America. I had forgotten that the US has to take its time to judge the scale of disaster before making declarations. It never occured to me that America must be waiting for the technologicaly advanced nations like East Timor to start making aid contributions.

According to the New York Times dated 30 december, money promised by the USA to help the victims of the Iran earthquake fund has yet to be paid out.The same source states that 5 billion dollars promised by Colin Powell to aid African Development 3 years ago ,not one cent has been paid out

So that means that all the parts affected by the Tsunami that are getting food and aid lifted in by Americans in American helicopters that are coming off American aircraft carriers should consider themselves jolly well lucky.

I don't know what you are shown on your TV as your government is American friendly but on my TV we are shown the Americans just throwing boxes out of helicopters where it is eagerly grabbed by the young and strong leaving the old ,weak and helpless getting none and some of the American aid is being sold on the black market. Much of the same shambles that happened in Vietnam ,the troops are too eager to get rid of the food and get the hell of the area

Oh please - can they do anything right by you? These are areas that there is no other way to get aid into them. There are people that are yet to be "found" and I would think speed is of the essence - get the aid to as many of those that can get to the helicopters and just hope they learnt how to share and haven't turned into savages yet.
