I recently got a brand new Pentium 4 with Windows XP Pro installed on it.
I have a copy of Office 2000 and I would like to know if it is compatible with XP?
I am using Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.
I am hesitant to install anything on here as I have a tendency to mess up and end up having serious problems.
So with this brand new pc I want to be extra cautious and not mess it up.
Thanks in advance.

Congratulations on the new PC! Office 2000 should be compatible with XP Pro (well, at least on my PC it is ), so no need to get Office XP.

Thanks Leau78. I shall try and install it on the weekend.
I have never had a pc that was brand new out of the box so this is a terrific new toy.
Again thanks.

How is Office 2003 compared to 97 and 2000?

After 2000, there was XP and 2003. The main difference in 2003 is that it increases network compatability. I have a copy of 2003 - For a standalone user, there is no need to get 2003.

However if you need OneNote (i.e. no traditional office components) etc, 2003 is good. I would recommend waiting for one more year for Longhorn OS. They might release a longhorn version.

I don't have the entire Office Suite but I do have Word 2000. This runs fine on XP Pro. Just a couple of points other than that.

Don't rely on the XP firewall. Consider installing a third party one such as Kerio, Sygate or ZoneAlam instead. These are better than XP's own firewall because they monitor outgoing attempts to connect to the Internet as well as protecting your computer from incoming dangers. The XP firewall only blocks incoming hacking attempts. Therefore, if a trojan should get onto your computer by some means or other, the XP firewall may not stop it from sending data out.

Internet Explorer is better protected as a result of SP2 (I expect a new system would come with SP2 installed) but is perhaps still more risky to use than a Mozilla based browser or Opera. Download and install one of those would be my advice. They will quite happily co-exist with IE. After a while, one or the other might even become more preferable to use.

I have Office 2003 on my office computer which has XP Pro, I also have WordPerfect 6.1 (circa 1995) and that also works perfectly with XP Pro. I think you will find that the newer operating systems will accept old software but the older operating systems generally won't accept the newer software. You cannot run Office 2003 on Windows 98 - I know because we tried and had to revert to Office 2000 (which does work with 98).

Sue (or anyone else),

Did you try installing 2003 (not office XP) on NT?

(No specific reason for asking but 2003 might work on older versions of network OS.)

No, we wanted it on PCs which were running 98. We don't want to upgrade them from 98 as most of the computers are about 5 years old and due for replacement shortly so not worth spending money on.

My two XP computers are both running Office 2000. I also have One Note 2003.
