Can someone help me with this puzzle?...

I've been looking at it for two weeks with no idea what the answers are...

Any help would be appreciated...

Here's the puzzle...

Fill in each blank with a single letter to form fairly common words or expressions.

BA_P
D_IL
LA_NG
H_ME (answer is not home)
DE_RE

As far as I can see there are none...

Are these fairly common words or expressions actually in english? Could they be abbreviations or acronyms?

These are NOT what I would call 'common words'.

BA_P - baRp (a Scottish word for a mound of stones)
D_IL - dEil (another Scots word, meaning 'devil')
LA_NG - I am stumped on this one
H_ME - hAme (part of a horse's harness), hEme (a component of haemoglobin)
DE_RE - deAre (an obsolete word from Chaucer, meaning 'to harm'), deEre (another Chaucerian word, meaning 'dear, beloved'), also a tractor builder of some note..

Hope these help.

Ozzz is a pretty good Scrabble fiend. He will be right on all of these.

btw - the tractor is spelled Deere (as in John Deere Tractors).

Laing and Layng are surnames but I don't think this is what you are after.

I'm sure they're just phonetic spellings of Scottish dialect. Laing simply means long, hame means home, deere means dear, etc.

Yes, but these are not 'fairly common words or expressions.'

We had some paving slabs delivered by a Scottish driver, who said "I've a trucka staines for yer" so I'm sure such expressions as those above are common in parts of Scotland.
Have a look at some Burns poems such as 'Ode to a Haggis', the first verse of which is:-
Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the puddin-race,
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe or thaum:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang's my arm.

I just got in touch with the puzzle's creator...

It seems that by "single letter" he meant "Greek letter"...

Here is the solution...

BArhoP
DetaIL
LApsiNG
HomegaME (Home game)
DEmuRE
