The way the question was phrased" what was the real cause" it`s possible that you are looking for some type of conspiracy answer. Perhaps I`m wrong, anyway the actual cause was a bomb.

As to who did it, well Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi and Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah were convicted of it.
