I'd really love to know the meaning of the phrase boxing clever. I googled it, I asked people I know and so far, nothing.

I think it's mainly a British term as I've never heard any one in the US use it. Help, please.

It means to keep your wits about you, to be circumspect and cunning.

That’s to say, it’s to behave like a clever boxer who ducks and weaves and keeps out of the way of his opponent’s punches and looks out for a chance to score with his own.
