Round 24 results

1. A woman who has won the Nobel prize in either Medicine, Chemistry or Physics

The first page of google results on "women Nobel Prize winners" includes two funtrivia pages! (one for the Nobel prize subcategory and one for a quiz "The Noblest Women")

2. A woman whose picture appeared on a U.S. postage stamp prior to 1950
10 points:
Pocahontas (1907), Susan B. Anthony (1936), Frances E. Willard (1940), Queen Isabella of Spain (1893), Clara Barton (1948), Virginia Dare (1937)
5 points: Martha Washington (1902) (3)
Not mentioned: Molly Pitcher (1928), Eleanor Roosevelt (1930), Louisa May Alcott (1940), Jane Addams (1940), Juliet Gordon Low (1948), Moina Michael (1948)

5 points: Aileen Riggin Soule (Springboard diving, 1920) (2)
In researching the answers I found that Aileen Riggins Soule, who was 14 when she competed in the Olympics, was still swimming competitively at age 90 and had set 5 world records for the 90-94 age group!

There are too many others to list those not mentioned.
No women were included as competitors in the ancient Olympics or in 1896. Women's tennis was included in 1900. Equestrian, in which men and women compete in the same event was also added in 1900. 1908 added figure skating for both men and women. Women's swimming was added in 1912. Women's foil (fencing) was first included in 1924. Women's track and field and women's gymnastics were added to the Olympics in 1928.

4. A woman who has been in space (as an astronaut, cosmonaut, etc.)
10 points:
Kalpana Chawla, Kathy Thornton, Sandra Magnus
5 points: Svetlana Yevgenyevna Savitskaya (2), Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova (2), Roberta Bondar (2)

Again, too many others to mention. A complete listing is found at Women of Space

5. A woman author of science fiction who had something published prior to 1970
10 points for everyone

Answers given were: Ursula Kroeber LeGuin ( Rocannon's World, pub. 1966), Charlotte Armstrong (better known as a mystery writer, her novelette Three Day Magic was first published in the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction in 1948), Katherine MacLean (The Diploids, pub. 1953), Anne McCaffrey (Freedom of the Race,pub.1953), Andre Norton (The Witch World,pub.1963), Joanna Russ (Picnic on Paradise,pub.1968), Marion Zimmer Bradley (The Door Through Space,pub.1961), Ayn Rand (Atlas Shrugged,pub.1957), Leigh Brackett (Shadow Over Mars, pub.1951)

Among those not mentioned are Mary Shelley (Frankenstein pub.1818) Charlotte Perkins Gilman Herland, pub.1915), C.L. Moore ( Jirel of Joiry stories, pub.1930's), and Judith Merril (That Only a Mother, pub.1948)

Round 26 Results

9 people participated this round

1. An English King who was the last of his name
10: Edwy the Only, John the Only, Harold II, William IV, George III
5: Charles II (2), Henry VIII (2)

Edwy, Harold, and John have been out of fashion for nearly 800 years, perhaps because in each case the last King to take on the name did not exactly have a distinguished reign: John was forced against his will to sign the Magna Carta, Harold lost his Country to the Normans, and Edwy lost half his Kingdom before dying at the age of 18. Charles, on the other hand, doesn't seem in danger of dying out as a Royal Name.

2: A word coined by Lewis Carroll for Jabberwocky
10: Burbled, Callooh, Galumphing, Manxome, Mimsy, Tulgey, Vorpal
5: Frabjous(2)

Some of these words are what are known as "Portmanteau words" (a term also coined by Carroll), meaning words formed by smushing together two or more other words into one. For example, lithe+slime=slithy, and fabulous+joyous=frabjous. Other words (galumphing, for example) were chosen more for the general sound they made when read aloud. Both galumphing and chortled (not given as an answer) have made their way into common use.

3. An actor who played/will play Batman in a movie
10: Lewis Wilson ("The Batman", 1943) Robert Lowery ("Batman and Robin", 1949), Michael Keaton ("Batman", 1989, and "Batman Returns", 1992)
5: Adam West ("Batman", 1966), Val Kilmer ("Batman Forever", 1995), Christian Bale ("Batman Begins", soon to open) (2 people each)
Most notably absent was George Clooney (1997's "Batman and Robin).

The first Batman film was a 15 episode serial showing Batman fighting against the evil Japanese mastermind (perhaps not surprising given its 1943 year of release).

4. One of the 10 most populous nations
10: Russia (8th)
5: China (1st, 4 people), India (2nd, 2 people), Brazil (5th, 2 people)

The U.S., Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Japan (in that order) round out the top 10

5: A 5+ letter word in reverse alphabetical order
10: Solid, Trona, Wrong, Yoked, Zonked
5: Spoke (2)
Not accepted: Ranged, Linge (out of order)

A very nice variety of answers from everybody. As far as I know, Wronged and Sponged are the longest acceptible words for this question. If I had asked for forward alphabetical order instead, it looks like the longest words are 6 letter ones like almost.

Scores:
45: Exit10
40: ElfTwinkle, littlewoman2
35: bracklaman, ceci1980, Mugaboo, SRSTrekker
30: gatsby722
25: Cinnam0n

Congrats to Exit10, and thanks to everybody who participated!

2) A tune from the 2nd Medley Selection set of the St Laurence O'Toole Pipe Band (Dublin)

This seems to have been the most difficult for you all, although a straightforward Google on 'St Laurence O Toole Pipe Band+Repertoire' would have solved all your troubles.

Whilst I've often played this game I was not aware of the names for the groups of tiles. I found this site very clear and helpful in explaining a little more about the game.

Ozz is having computer probs, so wasn't able to post his questions yesterday. So March round is over and I shall calculate the results over the weekend!
