First, one can share a file on a network. The file is placed on one computer. Then other users can edit, make changes or whatever to that file. The only hitch is that the main computer has to be on for that to be accomplished. (My problem is that the file to be shared is on someone else's laptop that is not always present. I need to change that so the file is on the permanent computer, and that computer has Windows 2000.)
Example:
Computer #1 has a file on it.
Computer #2 can go into that file and make changes.
Computer #3 can do the same.
However, Computer #1 must be on at all times. Of course this is for computers that are on a network.
Here's how it is done in XP.
To share a folder or drive
Using Shared Folders
Open Computer Management (Local).
In the console tree, click Shares.
Computer Management
System Tools
Shared Folders
Shares
On the Action menu, click New File Share.
Follow the steps in Create Shared Folder.
You will be prompted to select a folder or drive, type a new share name and description of the shared resource, and set permissions. After you provide this information, click Finish.
Notes
To open Computer Management, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
You must be a member of the Administrators or Power Users group to use Shared Folders.
