And just to add to to what Bruyere and Lothruin have said, there are some things that consume a considerable amount of income, which make you feel the pinch of rising gas prices a bit more acutely. For example, health insurance takes more than a third of every paycheck. Also, I don't work anymore, because we would actually lose money by paying for daycare. Rental rates are ridiculous (fortunately, my husband works for the complex in which we live, so we pay no rent right now).
It's all relative, I guess.
I've never been one to complain much about gas prices, myself. When people complain about it to me, I normally say Hey, at least we're not paying European prices! Same thing for cigarettes, when I was a smoker.
And at least we don't have to wait in line for hours like we did when there was the shortage in the 70's.

An update from the center of Canada, the price just went from 83 cents a litre to 92 cents a litre. I was planning a road trip this summer, perhaps not if the prices keep going up.
