Sight:- It has to be in the back garden looking out across Lough Neagh on a hot summers day when the surface of the lough is as smooth as glass with a few fishing boats grouped together, and the peaks of the Mourne Mountains just visible on the horizon.

Sound:- The sound of people in the distance on a still night, laughing and talking.

Touch:- the feel of a brand new pair of socks being worn for the first time.

Smell: Have to agree with the smell of fresh cooked bread.

Taste: The taste of the bit where the apple and the sponge meet in an apple sponge desert.

Wow, your "sight" sounds so beautiful, Sean! I now want to combine some of yours with my electrical storm! (edit cause Iv'e jsut seen PF's ... wonder if we can put the nothern lights in there as well??? )
(side story cuase you've reminded me so clearly of it - I was once hitch-hiking in Scotland and was looking for a lift on the edge of a lough which sounds very similar to yours. Was a beautiful sunny day, crystal clear waters, cloud topped mountains in the distance, ducks waddling past and not one bugger would pick me up. But it was all good - would've been quite happy to stay there all day )

(Digressing a bit from the topic)
It is amazing the only problem being that the hot summer days here are rare and one without flies rarer, though I am used to them and they don't bother me.
(Lightening storms are amazing though I have only ever seen one forked lightening storm which was in dublin a few years ago, but that is a story for a different day.)

Sight-> Watching the snow fall on trees and houses from my window
Sound-> The waves breaking on the shore of the beach by my cottage as I fall asleep.
Touch-> The way the sheets and blankets feel when you're absolutely exhausted and you jump into your bed for the night.
Smell-> The smell of the air right before a huge rainstorm.
Taste-> Like PF, anything chocolate is to die for.

(I'd love to someday live somewhere that has mountains so I could see those each day... and I've always wanted to see the northern lights as well )

yes, aramis, I know just what you mean about touching something old. I've worked at several museums, always dealing with the colllections themselves. The oldest bound book we had at the Smith Foundation was hand- written in about 1200 a.d. The only problem with working around antiquities -you must always wear cotton gloves . Since I love the touch of things like that , wearing gloves everyday for two years got to be a drag!

All the thoughts that go through your mind...was this penned by a monk, intent on preserving what little written record there was during the end of the dark ages? Or written by some nobleman or his lady -they were some of the few who could read and write, besides the folks at the local monastery. So many questions.[ sorry to get all glassy eyed like that. This is one of my favorite subjects ]

We could probably start a new thread on this subject - "What is the oldest man-made object you've touched?". I've done some research on early explorers, and in some cases have held their original notes and diaries (wearing cotton gloves admittedly), but it is an amazing experience, when you try to imagine the person and the conditions under which they were written - using quill pens dipped in ink, in some remote area and extremely uncomfortable, unhealthy or even dangerous conditions! A few weeks ago in Egypt I visited many ancient sites and touched statues, sarcophagii, etc which were 1,000's of years old - just fantastic! I've held old coins, neolithic tools and flints, etc, etc and felt the same. Once in a remote area of Nepal I was invited to have tea with an old Lama who showed me some ancient books and statuary. I had no idea of what was written in them, but again, what a privelege to hold such things. I'd seen him beside a large prayer wheel, and given him a photo of the Dalai Lama so 'tea and artifacts' was my reward for this small gesture!

Taste - Tasting pasta, steaks, ice cream, chocolate, milkshakes.

Sight: My daughter sleeping. She's always beautiful, but when she's sleeping she's also quiet and not misbehaving.

Sound: A train. Not the whistle, but just the clickety clack. Whenever I get stopped by a coal train I have to turn down the radio and open my window, just to listen. Sometimes I close my eyes, and other times I read the numbers as the cars go past, but always I listen. When I was a baby, we lived in a trailer house on the family farm, up in coal country in Wyoming. The train tracks were roughly 100yds from my bedroom. It wasn't the noisy, shaking, fast sound you see on TV, it was a slow, rhythmic and almost melodic sound, and that is how I fell asleep at night, rocked by the heavy-laden coal trains heading south to supply the nation.

Touch: Thunderstorms. I know this might seem more likely for a favorite smell or sight or sound, but I LOVE the way a warm, spring thunderstorm feels. The hot, heavy air, the warm droplets, the way my hair raises up just before the lightning. Even when the rain is heavy and soaking in seconds, just to stand in the middle of it, especially if the day has been rather hot, well... To me, even the buildup of a thunderstorm feels wild and free, dangerous yet so familiar as to be almost comforting. The very change in the air is enough to make me stand in wonder at the power and utter dominance of nature.

Smell: Lemons.

Taste: This is tough. I can't decide between good, Indian mulligatawny soup (the spicy, blended lentil type, not the brothy English version with apples) or lobster meat soaked in butter and lemon juice.
