Hi, I'm doing a multimedia assignment but I have no idea what a Convolution mask is, nor do any of my classmates and the teacher wont tell us. So I was wondering if any of you lovely people could help me.
What is a Convolution mask? and the critera of it should be the following :
That its saved as an .acf file.
That the filter is effective
That the mask has been created and not a default mask.
And that the mask is 3x3 and adds up.

Now, could anybody please be as so kind as to translate that into English?

I know a bit about image processing but the knowledge is not that deep. I've heard of convolution being something to do with image sharpening and have found a bit about that. See the paragraphs entitled How does Sharpen work? on this site.

I can only assume that a 'convolution mask' is a mask placed on an image that limits the sharpening or blurring filter effect to the masked area.

If you can't come up with a better answer than that, you could put that one to the teacher. If it gets laughed at, you'll know it was wrong

To be honest my teacher has such a strong chinese accent that I can't understand a word he says even IF he decides to tell us! That site is perfect! I now just need to use my head and figure out how to make one! <sighs> There's always a draw back to finding out the knowlage you need, for me, it just means I now have no excuse to not do this work

I use Corel PhotoPaint but perhaps there are some similarities with PhotoShop in this area. So how about opening an image, selecting the square mask tool and drawing a mask on it 3x3cm in size (if that's what he meant by 3x3 ...don't know about the 'adds up' part). Blur or sharpen the area within the mask and then save the effect as a preset filter. See if the option is there to save it as an acf file (adobe custom filter). See if you could then apply the 3x3 effect as a filter to any image. Perhaps that would be something like what he requires.

Ahhhh, now that you metion thats what acf stands for, i do recall a function in pohtoshop that allows you to make custom filters! That's probably what he means. It all (soft of) makes sense now.
Once again thank you so much. <curtsies>
