How can you get the number 51 using mathematical operations and these numbers: 2,4,4,4,5? Note: Each number can only be used once and when squaring either use a four and two or two fours.
Anyone who can help me out here?

45 + 4 + 4 - 2 = 51

4x4=16-2=14x4=56-5=51

2+4!+4!-4+5,
2x4!+4+4-5,
This reminds of the card game (using mathematical operators) involving being dealt 4 of the 40 cards up to ten in the deck and seeking to tally 24.

4!+4!+5- the second root of 4
2!+4!+4!+(-4+5)!
4!+4!+ the second root of (4+5)
4!+4!+5-(4/2)
4!+4!-2+(5!/4!)
but my favourite is
(4+4)!/(4+2)!-5
and you could permit
(4^4-52)/4
52-4^(4-4)
et alia if you want to play forever.

You have me puzzled here, what is '!'? Does this follow the rules set down about squaring?

The exclamation mark indicates a factorial, i.e. the product of all the whole numbers from the number itself down to 1.

So 4! = 4*3*2*1 = 24.
5! = 5*4*3*2*1 = 120, and so on.

Thanks TT, so those answers given by someothername don't follow the rules set down in the puzzle. The way I read it you would have to count the 4, 3, 2 and 1 each time and they do not exist.

Sorry, Sue, but 4! is a legitimate tactic in maths puzzles. The 'factorial' function is a common occurrence in probability equations- it can be scary at times, though.. the odds on winning some lotto games are really 'out there'

What I meant is according to the rule in the question asked, ie if squaring it must either be counted as two 4s or a 4 and a 2. By factoring you would then have to count each number and they simply do not appear in the sequence of numbers provided.

No kidding, especially if you figure some are 54! (54*53*52...*3*2*1).

The way I see the question, it says 'using mathematical operations and these numbers: 2,4,4,4,5'.

! (factorial) is a mathematical operation, not unsimilar to a + sign or - sign etc etc...

Thanks everyone for taking an interest, does anyone know any other good questions? I should add this one:

The integral of (t^4.e^-t.dt) + the integral of (t^4.e^-t.dt) + 4 - 5mod2

Just to say I had to give up at least three courses as I couldn't handle maths. I wish I could do complex equations for fun- I can't even do them to save my life!
