Ouch, a woman here in Jersey has just had her first baby, it weighed in at 13lbs 3 ounces - for the metrically inclined, I make that 5.98 kilos!

They showed a photo of it, it is SO fat! Bang goes all those first size baby clothes.

I'm not sure the exact size, but there was a lady somewhere worldwide that had a 20-22 lb baby (or 9-10 kg).

Sue, did the baby arrive via c-section?

Yes, it was planned for natural but she was ten days overdue so they decided to do a C section as they knew it was big.

My sister's youngest baby was 11 lbs 13 oz. He had to start out wearing clothing in the over 3 months range. We tend to grow them big in our family. My two sons were over 10 pounds. (Both sectioned babies )

At the hospital where I work it is becoming more common place to see high birth weight babies. I'm talking the 9-10 pound range.

My first was just four and a half pounds, so a third of the above baby!

Stangely enough, some of the smaller babies can be harder for a mother to give birth to. They don't have the strength/size to help push their way out of the birth canal. Mom does all the work.

Mine were all around 8 lbs, but I just heard recently about quintuplets born to a surrogate mother. The main interest of the story was supposed to be that the babies ended up being quintuplets, but what I noticed was the fact that each baby was between 3 lb.7 oz and 3 lb.15 oz. That's over 18 lbs. of babies!

Those are good weights for quins. Just imagine carting that lot about. Wonder if she got stretch marks!

I couldn't imagine it!! Toward the end of my pregnancies, I was in agony. I would actually be in tears because of pain in my back.

As I mentioned earlier, both my sons were delivered via c-section. My second was a 'cold-sectioned' delivery. That means that I experienced no labour at all. We just went straight through to the operating room. Sometimes babies born in this manner have breathing difficulties as a result of not having been squeezed through the birth canal. This squeezing is good for baby as it forces mucus out of its lungs. Anyway, my son ended up in the NICU (neo-natal intensive care unit) as he had aspirated some fluid. Whenever my husband and I would go to visit him in the NICU we would find the nurses arguing over who would get to feed him. (Imagine this 10 pound baby in amongst all the tiny 1-2 pound premies). He looked gigantic.

The baby I mentioned also ended up in the SCBU (Special Care Baby Unit) so probably the same thing.

Yes, very likely. It's amazing how many of these bigger babies have problems after birth. Some tend to think big baby=healthy baby. And in most cases, yes, they are healthy. But many of these larger babies are born by way of c-section and do develop breathing problems/pneumonia. Also some of them are the result of gestational diabetes which can once again result in difficulties for baby.

This couple had actually agreed to pay the surrogate mother $15,000, but she decided not to accept the money when she realized that quints and all their added expenses were on the way.
I had tons of back pain, too, Ballykissangel, and I can't imagine how it would be to carry 18 pounds! Here's the link to the story.

I had a text-book pregnancy. Everything was average. Kit was born right on her projected due date. The labor was not easy for me, but there was nothing unexpected, she weighted right at 7lb 9oz, almost exactly average, and the worst thing we had to deal with was a slight bit of jaundice. I can't imagine carrying a child much larger, and I certainly can't imagine recovering from a C-Section.

When my niece was born last December, my sister-in-law had a C-section. She didn't really have any complications after birth, but a day or two before, her BP was really high.
