I am a huge fan of British sitcoms. Picking a favourite is difficult as I find them all hilarious.

But if I had to narrow it down to one I would choose "Keeping Up Appearances".

Each actor plays his/her part perfectly. Hyacinth is pretentious, yes, a social climber, yes, but deep down very affectionate and loyal to her dysfunctional family.

Richard. The perfect hen-pecked husband.

I love the Daisy, Onslow and Rose exchanges. Throw Richard and Hyacinth into the mix and you've got funny TV viewing.

I am hard pushed to choose beween "Keeping up Appearances" and "One Foot in the Grave", both hilarious.

Oh, I'd forgotten "Waiting for God", how could I possibly forget that one!

'Porridge', 'Mind Your Language', and 'Hello, Hello' must qualify, but only because I am a politically INcorrect Aussie

My favourite would probably be 'Fawlty Towers'.. there are so many good ones to choose from! 'Yes, Minister', 'Are You Being Served', 'Blackadder'- I have been a fan of Pommy comedy for many, many years.

"Waiting for God" is truly hilarious. Diana cracks me up. She can be so scathing in her remarks.

So many great comedy series to choose from, but where are all the great sitcoms these days? I have a feeling that political correctness has played a part in the decline of the once-famous British sitcom.
My Top5 would have to be:

1: Only Fools and Horses
2: Black Adder (especially the 4th series)
3: Steptoe and Son
4: Alf Garnett
5: Fawlty Towers

There's been a slew of fine British sitcoms and I'm afraid I've fallen behind on some of the newer, yet excellent, ones. However, I feel compelled to salute some of the evergreens:

1. Fawlty Towers-a Hall of Fame gem! Cleese never better. "Ahh your pet a Noweigan hamster you say, Manuel?, Very big in the Middle Ages, y'know..seems to have started a little thing called the Bubonic Plague!!" (head slap follows)

2. Yes Minister- A London Times' five page article might skewer entrenched governmental bureaucracy almost as accurately..but not with this series' hilarious wit.

3. The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin
An off-center wonder. RIP, talented Leonard Rossiter..may you escape, in the great beyond, your son-in-law's nettle wine at last

Although the subject isn't skit comedy, I can't end without saluting the absudist band of genuises that comprised Monty Python and also give a retro tip of the cap to that national treasure, Benny Hill.

No one mentioned The Vicar of Dibley. I am helpless with laughter at that one when it comes on BBC Prime.

I adored Waiting for God, and the Vicar Of dibley and Keeping Up apperances.
I taped all of the Waiting for God Ones but someone borrowed it and taped over them
I was furious. as they don't show it here anymore.
Oh well.It might come back one day.

Afraid I will always be a fan of "Only Fools and Horses". Maybe it went downhill a little in the last few Christmas specials, but it will always be my favourite comedy. I like "Dad's Army" and "Porridge". Never got into "Little Britain" and "The Office"

Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Coupling, dinnerladies, Waiting For God, Porridge, Going Straight, Two Pints of Lager. I can't stand Dad's Army, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Some Mothers Do Have 'Em and Are You Being Served. Urrgh.
Jeeves and Wooster isn't a sitcom, by the way.

I don't see what everyone likes about the Office, I didn't like it one bit. Vicar of Dibley was funny and Some Mothers Do Have 'Em. It's a pity they didn't make more episodes of Fawlty Towers. The one I loved the most was 'Bread' (I think that's a sitcom)
I loved Men Behaving Badly, I remember one christmas all I asked for was the video of it. I didn't care if I got nothing else, still have it now.
this might sound stupid but I'm not too sure what's classed as a sitcom so I just looked at the above posts and picked out the ones I liked or didn't like. I liked Only Fools and Horses and Steptoe and son too, Keeping up Appearances was good sometimes, my granny loves that programme. I think I watch too much television.

I think a lot of people don't like the Office because he is so very very true to life it is not funny. I find it very clever.Maybe not so funny.

I can't stand the Office either. Ricky Gervais rubs me up the wrong way completely, what with his cancer jokes and poking fun at people with Motoneurone Disease. He should be taken out, blindfolded, and shot...

ggrrr...

everyone at one stage or an other in their life end up being the butt of a comedian's sketch/show, whether it's your religion, nationality, race or whatever. Different people has a different sense of humour, some things you can take, others you don't take so well, I've learned from experience to just ignore it. I just don't think the Office is funny at all, the majority of comedy shows are great and have lots of funny things in them even things connected to me (if you know what i mean) is make into a joke but I don't know, I still think it's funny, maybe I shouldn't but the way I see it I got used to it after a while.

As others have said, it's so hard to choose. No-one does comedy as well as the British in my opinion. The more politically incorrect, the better.

My favourite is "The Thin Blue Line" by Rowan Atkinson, which never got the acclaim it deserved.

I also love:

Keeping Up Appearances
Fawlty Towers
The Vicar of Dibley
The Brittas Empire
Porridge
To The Manor Born
Yes Minister
