I took my 8-yr old to see Madagascar. I wasn't expecting anything special. Whoa shocker...I loved it. It had me, ME, laughing out loud, and that does not happen very often. There is some very fast wit/play on words/references to other flicks/adult humour hidden in amongst the "kids-film". The animation is unique as well. Plus on the parent side, the moral is A-OK in my books.
Like Van Morrison sung so well "Listen to the lion, inside of you"
All in all, I would rank this up there, if not even above Shrek.
My 2 cents have been tossed into the pond.

Thanks for your view. We're gonna take the kids to see it this weekend. Sounds like it should be good.

That is encouraging to hear, Auntie. Around here we are always at an impass as to what's worth seeing. Naturally, my thirteen year old is repulsed by any subject her little sister would enjoy, and I'm caught in the middle, wondering what smirky teen movie or Winnie the Pooh funfest I will have to endure next time.

I am always grateful for intelligent, wryly funny movies like Shrek, Holes, or Secondhand Lions which were all as good for me as they were for the girls. Thanks for recommending what I hope will be another across- the- board classic.

I just saw this movie today with my 11 year old cousin. She asked me if I wanted to go see it and I was all, "*sigh* I guess..." But inside? Yes! Penguins! (Who were hysterical, by the way)I also loved the giraffe and, of course, the crazy king lemur. For what it's worth, I (an older teen) highly recommend this too.

I would lukewarmly of recommend it (coming from another "older teen"), but probably more as a rental thing. The script is pretty funny, but there's not much in the way of story or characters. In fact very little happens story-wise, other than a conflict quickly tacked on at the end about Alex the Lion and the food chain, which never really seems appropriate. (is it me or is he just on a steak withdrawal?) The characters are likeable (especially the penguins) which helps considering there's no depth to them. The giraffe and the hippo are significant characters, but don't have much of a personality. And the foosa are completely useless... Madagascar's not really a bad film, but I think it's crystal clear by this point that Pixar entirely dominates computer-animated entertainment, in terms of quality, as the only thing that maybe even begins to come close to their level is the first "Shrek" movie. (and even that is dubious...)

Just came back from taking the family to this one (kids 11, 7, 3 and the wife) and let me just say we all loved it even the 3 year old sat through it all. David Schwimmer, Ali G, Cedric the Entertainer all offer good performances. But be warned you'll be humming and singing a certain song when you leave the theatre.
