Just 6 hours to kick-off!
Telstra Stadium holds 83,500 .. but that won't beat the attendance of 85,022 at Australia v Iran at the MCG in November 1997.

Neither game is, however, a record. What's the record attendance at a soccer match in Australia?

About 150 at Marconi Oval?

I think it was at the Sydney 2000 Olympics at Olympic Stadium, Homebush Bay- 88,000 watched Australia V FIFA All-Stars.

I found this while I was searching, and was rather amazed! It is from the Melbourne Cricket Ground site, here

Quote:

It also holds the world attendance records for the following sports: Aussie Rules (121,696 in 1970); Rugby League (87,000 in 1994); Rugby Union (91,000 in 1997); Cricket (90,600 in 1961) and Baseball (No, this is not a misprint; when a baseball match was played as an exhibition sport at the '56 Olympics, it attracted a crowd of 102,000 - still the world record!).

Melbourne have lost two of those records to Sydney:

Rugby League:
NRL Grand Final, 26th Sept 1999 : 107,558 : St George-Illawarra v Melbourne Storm

Rugby Union:
Bledisloe Cup, 15th July 2000 : 109,874 : Australia v New Zealand

>> I think it was at the Sydney 2000 Olympics at Olympic Stadium, Homebush Bay

nope, it's more than 88,000 .. and it's more than the attendance at the soccer final at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, which was 104,000.

Goes to penalty shootout and Australia are in the world cup next year ... you'd almost think we'd won the world cup with all the celebration

Were you at Federation Square, Sankdog? Looked like a pretty good place to be if you couldn't be at the game. Soccer isn't my main sport but anything with atmosphere will drag me in.

Gt? Well? How was it??

Well ,well, well.......what a tension filled game that was.....and, being an impartial Brit, I have to say that the best team on today's performance won.

And in the penalty shootout, there were mixed fortunes for the two Boro lads......the Duke knocked his penna wide but was redeemed by two top-drawer saves from Mark Schwartzer (the second one was brilliant).

Great atmosphere, great result, great celebrations underway, well done the Aussies.

No-one'd leave the stadium.
All the trains and busses were held back, the announcer begged people to go and catch their trains or buses, but 82,698 people stayed there and sang!

We died a thousand cuts watching that ...

Trinidad & Tobago and Switzerland have also qualified. Czech Republic and Spain are sure to follow, to make up the 32 teams for World Cup 2006.

WE WON!!!
Twice my team has reached penalities and twice they have won. Liverpool in the champions league and now Australia in the WC qualyifier.

Fed square was going off! Heaps of people all supporting and cheering the same team. I was right to be nervous pre game, but god it was good.

What do people think about the way that the groups are done. Personally I believe it should be done purely on rankings or at random. FIFA are always looking for an extra dollar unfortunantly.
