Due to an optical illusion which occurs every so many years (18.6 years in fact), tonight the moon will look huge when it rises in the UK. This is because it will be very low on the horizon. I must remember to go out to look aat it when it rises.

This site explains the illusion

Another articlce about it in The Time

Being the die-hard sky-watcher I am, the phenomenon of the moon (and even the sun & constellations) appearing much larger as it approaches the horizon isn't new to me, though it's impossible see more than a faint reddish glow from here in the tropics.

Fortunately, my ever handy sky-simulation program, Starry Night Pro, did an excellent job simulating the London sky at around 4:00 a.m. on the 23rd of June...one could see just what the article was talking about!

Edited to say I hope at least some of our UK members were awake to witness this!

Typical, I forgot all about it! Still, they say tonight will be almost as good.

Many thanks for mentioning this, Sue. I'll make a point of having a look at the rising moon. I just hope the sky here isn't cloudy here tonight.

Our back garden slopes downwards to the south east and the view is unimpeded so we get a great view. The moon was spectacular last night, orange coloured at first gradually assuming its normal bright yellow colour. Through binoculars the dark and light areas were most impressive. Weather is changing so I doubt we'll see it tonight.

Well, it sure wasn't tiny from here in California! People are going around in bad moods though, myself included.

Watch out for the werewolves!
Here, in Wyoming, the coyotes love a full moon for yipping and barking. Drives our cats into the house on an otherwise nice evening of patrolling for mice.

Nothing to do with full moons but I was staring at the moon [as I am driven to do from time to time] the other afternoon about 4.00pm and noticed a small shiny object close to it. The object wasn`t moving and I couldn`t work out what it was. It looked like a new star.

Later my clever and well informed wife advised me that what I had been observing was in fact Jupiter.

The next day one of my co-workers mentioned that she had been wondering about what was appearing next to the moon. I scornfully told her that it was obviously Jupiter and walked away, smugly leaving her in awe at my knowledge.
