Went in and did it again, because I forgot to note my score last time (2.7666).
Really so many of these questions are meaningless, in today's world, or have different meanings than that intended at the time. In this time of bird flu and SARS, the 'people move around so much we must protect ourselves" statement is perfectly reasonable, of course we must. I strongly suspect, though, that this was not the original meaning of the question, that this is 'code' for racial purity.

"Wars and social troubles may someday be ended by an earthquake or flood that will destroy the whole world." Again, I have no trouble answering 'strongly agree' to this statement. Because of the use of the word 'may', anyone would have to agree with it. I think though, that there is some subtext of 'therefore, we don't have to do anything about these troubles' and possibly some 'just vengeance of an angry God' going on there too.

I think that if I had answered the statements according to what the subtext was going for, rather than the face value, I would be more than an airhead, I would be the snivellingest of wimps!

Boy is that weird. I bet it's the public whipping for child abusers that did it. I'm a 3.06.

My score was almost the same as Bruyere's - in other words, within normal limits but close to borderline liberal airhead.

hmm..the test doesn't calculate on a black and white basis!

Quote:

I've often wondered if the "authoritarian personality" is actually a "personality type" at all. I like your description of it as a "mindset".

I'm a believer in the 'mindset' perspective. Personality tests were a hobby of mine and my fav was the MBTI. It used to be online free but alas...no more. I've had several expensive ones done and only once when I had access to an MBTI certified trainer did I get some valid answers to certain anomalies present in all my results. This test is respected internationaly and its flaws are legion! I've struggled past the vocabulary for understanding and all I can be sure of is the next struggle.

Best example of those anomalies?

I always tested as an introvert yet, face to face, a stranger will insist that I'm an extrovert. Not so. I've LEARNED extroversion. It takes a lot out of me.

INFP has been the most frequent result (1st time almost 30 years ago).

But after experiencing an act of violence I'm now an INFJ.

Translation: before I went with the flow, didn't need a schedule and was one of those people you could call who'd drop everything to join you on a frivolous outing or to provide a helping hand.

No more. I need a couple days notice and an EXACT time, place, iteniary and for you to promise me all this on whatever holy scripture you follow. If you want help? Submit a 500 word essay as to why I should do this for you? (ok, I'm not that bad)

I do think we are all born with a personality but that personality is also a coping mechanism which can be moulded, adapted or strained. And if overwhelmed? Broken.

I think the same about sexuality. We are born one way but pressures from our environment or overwhelming experiences can lead us to behave against our first natures.

Overwhelm anyone and they will react by simplifying their world. They have to. Germany was picked like a turkey carcass after WWI and was primed for a Hitler. Indeed, Hitler was well loved by almost ALL of the world leaders in the beginning. They saw him as Germany's best chance to get back on its feet. They even gave them the Olympics.

Remember Patti Hearst? The kind of torture and brainwashing she was put through to make her one of them? Overwhelming a person has been a tried and true method of forcing acceptance of concepts that otherwise wouldn't be tolerated. Cults know all about this stuff.

I don't think being a victim of terrorism is necessary for a high 'F' score or a low 'F' score. Think a series of (haha can't resist)...a serious of very unfortunate events can overwhelm anyone and an overly simplified viewpoint on a certain topic can be a lifelong result. Part of being human.

All this is just my opinion but partly also, unfortunately, personal experience.

I'm wondering that just the need to DEFINE this stuff is an example of this trait that is a PART of each of our personalities. When it becomes the MOST active part then...well...I dunno what then.

Maybe...

If we are all born with two legs to walk with and we lose one to disease or tragedy so we begin hopping instead of walking, is it a problem? I don't think so. The hopping person may be slower and not as graceful but variety is the spice of life.

But if they insist that hopping is the right way and walking is for the weak minded, snivelling liberals?

I think its best not to descriminate just because a person is hopping and I would tell them to go f*** themselves.

.
P.S. I hop around a lot!
