Round 12 Results:

Ten players this round

Question 1: Name a piece of furniture commonly found in a living room/den.

10 points: end table, lamp, ottoman, sofa, entertainment center, recliner chair, pouffe, telephone stand

5 points: curio cabinet (2)

Question 2: Name a famous person born in Georgia (in the United States).

10 points: Devon Werkheiser (actor), Doc Holliday (gambler and gunfighter), Jackie Robinson (Major League Baseball player), Michael Stipe (band member of REM), DeForest Kelley (actor), Spike Lee (movie director), Trisha Yearwood (singer), Ludacris (rapper)

5 points: Richard Wayne Penniman (singer, better known as Little Richard) (2)

FYI, I found conflicting answers for the birthplace of the rapper known as Ludacris (his birth name is Christopher Bridges and he’s also been known as Chris Lova Lova). Several web sites list his birthplace as Atlanta, Georgia, but several sites also list his birthplace as Champaign, Illinois, and state that he later relocated to Atlanta. However, since several sites do list his birthplace as Atlanta, whether that’s correct or not, I will accept that answer.

Question 3: Name a well-known writer or poet who committed suicide.

10 points: Will Cuppy, Hart Crane, Hunter S. Thompson, Anne Sexton

5 points: Virginia Woolf (2), Sylvia Plath (2), Ernest Hemingway (2)

Question 4: Name an actor who played Doris Day’s love interest in a movie made during the 1950s.

10 points: Clark Gable, Ray Bolger, John Raitt

5 points: Gordon MacRae (3), Howard Keel (2), Rock Hudson (2)

Question 5: Name one of the last things you do before getting into bed for the night.

10 points for everyone: use body lotion, lock the doors, do barncheck, take feet off the floor, turn on a fan, take off watch, get the coffee machine loaded for the morning, close down FunTrivia, put on nail strengthener stuff, check on the kids & kiss them goodnight.

ROUND 14 RESULTS

Eight people played this round. Thank you all!

1 Please name a famous blue-eyed person

Worth 10 points – everyone got 10 points!
Julie Andrews, Cameron Diaz, Matthew MacConaughey, Lee Remick, singer/guitarist Tommy Shaw, Frank Sinatra (Old Blue Eyes himself!), James Stewart, George Washington

I didn’t actually check Washington’s eye colour out, I just believe you.

Worth 10 points:
Croatia, France, Iceland, San Marino

3 A pitcher on the 2005 Toronto Blue Jays roster

Worth 10 points:
Gustavo Chacin, Brandon League, Ted Lilly, Dustin McGowan, Ricky Romero*

Worth 5 points:
Justin Speier (2)

*I was lenient with Romero, who is a prospect who has just signed with the Jays, knowing that the person who chose him doesn’t see a lot of Jays games, and because it made no real impact on the result.

4 A song from the movie 'G.I. Blues

Worth 10 points:
Doin’ the Best I Can, Tonight Is So Right For Love, Wooden Heart

Worth 5 points:
Big Boots (3), Pocketful of Rainbows (2)

William Peel (Captain, RN (Naval Brigade), Crimea, 1854/5), Arthur Wilson (Captain, RN (Naval Brigade), Sudan, 1884)

Not accepted: John Marshall, who as an Army recipient would have had a crimson ribbon on his VC. (Lest anyone think I’m being unfair, the person who gave this answer elected to take a zero, with a smile, after being offered the same assistance as was given to others.)

Not mentioned: The first-ever recipient (by date of deed) Mate Charles Lucas, RN HMS Hecla, The Baltic, 1854, and many others.

We have two winners, both with perfect scores of 50! They are gemini19 and ren33.

ROUND 19 - Friday, August 19th

Around the FT Forums

Not making you stray too far from home this week.

1. Tell me a question answered under the FAQ page of the FT Forums. (just the question, you don't have to give me the answer too.)

2. Tell me a colour scheme/style sheet you can choose in order to view the FT Forums. (The style sheets with the same names but are large font will be considered the same and counted as one.)

3. Tell me a forum moderator or administrator with a number attached to their screen name.

4. Tell me the name of the forum which you least visit.

5. When composing a private message or post, you are given convenient boxes of instant UBB code links, instant graemlins, and instant font colours to use. Give me one of the items in the instant UBB code box.

If you don't know where to find this stuff, just ask and I'll be glad to help. Have fun.

ROUND 17 answers

1) Any object, organisation or person that has the name Mercury

Worth 10 points
House of Mercury (handbags), Mercury Travel, Portland Mercury (newspaper), mercury thermometer, Mercury Records, Daniela Mercury (singer), Gold Mercury International, Mercury Morris (NFL player), Mercury (outboard motors)

I thought of this question while reading my local newspaper The Mercury (Southern Tasmania). Other possiblities included the Planet Mercury, the god Mercury, the element Mercury, Mercury cars, Mercury Insurance and Freddy Mercury. (singer)

2) Any actor who has portrayed George Armstrong Custer in a movie (please name the movie]

Worth 10 points
Ned Findlay, Wayne Maunder, James Millican, Fred Duprez, Francis Ford

Worth 5 points
John Beck (2), John Miljan (2)

No-one mention Richard Mulligan from 'Little Big Man' which is my favourite western

3) A recipient of the New Zealand Bravery Star

Worth 10 points
Trevor John Mokaruka, Sgt Jeanette Ruth Park, Robert Edwin Hall, Const. Damien Pater John Klavs

Worth 5 points
Walter Bruce Butler (5)

4) Any mammal that has a longer gestation period than a human does

I accepted gestation periods longer than 274 days as human gestation is generally regarded as being between 266-274 days.

Worth 10 points
Killer whale (517 days), Cow (284 days), Giraffe (457 days), Malayan Tapir (392 days), donkey (12-14 months), rhinoceros (16 months), Javan Rhinoceros (15-16 months)

Worth 5 points
Camel (400 days) (2)

The people who answered camel and rhinoceros (not Javan rhino) are lucky that I worded the question 'any mammal' and not 'any species of mammal (as I usually do) as there are 5 species of rhino and 2 species of camel. Next time I will remember the word species

5) Any of the French composers that made up the group known as Les Six

Worth 10 points
None

Worth 5 points
Francis Poulenc (2), Louis Durey (3), Darius Milhaud (2), Arthur Honneger (2)

I'll be computerless for a couple of weeks beginning the 30th of August, so have swapped Rounds with Exit, so...

1 Any green vegetable
2 A golfer who wore the Masters Tournament's green jacket between 1996 and 2005
3 A famous person with Green anywhere in their name
4 An actor or actress who played a member of the Morgan family in the 1941 movie 'How Green Was My Valley'

Round 20:

Please give:
1. A person who appears on Canadian Currency.
2. A country beginning with the letter "L"
3. A playing card with exactly 4 eyes on it (both rank and suit please) (editted, as I forgot that cards typically carry two pictures on them!)

4. A nation other than the United States which has a team competing in this year's Little League World Series.
5. A word worth exactly 2 points in Scrabble (any word appearing in either the British or the American scrabble dictionary is okay)

I'm going to be out of town over the next week, so this round will be open a long time, probably not closing until the 29th or 30th. Good luck to all!
