I need some help from some of you experts out there. I recently stopped using my cable modem to access the internet. When I did, I went back to AOL Dial-up. Well, as I am sure you know firewalls are obstructive to AOL. I tried using the book to my Norton Firewall to find a way to allow AOL access, and was not very successful. So, admittedly stupid, I turned off the Norton firewall and used Windows firewall to sign on. Well, when I went to sign off of AOL my computer went crazy on me. My firewall was unusable, and my computer lost its ability to remember most everything. It defaulted back to its original settings, like asking me if I would like to tour Windows XP again, and changing my classic windows settings back into XP style settings. Not allowing to run some programs, forgetting my printer was installed, slamming AOL closed or freezing up on me. I tried restoring, it helped, until I would power down again.
Well, my Norton virus detected nothing for the last several weeks. After uninstalling it and reinstalling it for the second time, it finally told me I had a Trojan.elitebar virus that it could not fix for me.
Any suggestions on how to get this out of the computer, an effective and user friendly firewall, and anything else helpful I could learn here? I would rather not have to take it in for repair, as I am financially suffering just now. That is why I no longer have the wonderful fast cable modem any more.
Thanks in advance!
