Have you seen a good movie recently? Or a horrible one? Let us know whether it's worth watching.

Hmm... I recently saw The Pledge. Directed by Sean Penn and starring Jack Nicholson, I had high hopes for this one. I think maybe that contributed to its failure. It wasn't what I'd expected, though I can't exactly say it was bad. It denied the viewer quite a bit of closure, which I think was its aim, but was frustrating nonetheless. As a film (in an artistic sense, ignoring the sheer entertainment value), I thought it was pretty good. It was interesting to see Sean Penn's vision, if nothing else.

There is a little known movie out there, well at least here in Canada as it is a Canadian movie ... titled 'The Cube'. It can be found in the horror section but I would not classify it as a horror. Anyway, the movie is about a group of people who are locked in this massive cube and each one of them has a special ability that helps them get out. It's quite involved and definelty worth your $4.00.

The last movie I've seen was "Training Day." It is a great movie. It's format resembles one of an independent film, but it has well knowns from both the movie and music industry popping up from time to time. Macy Gray, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Doggy Dog all make appearances- and more surprising, all can act.
A neat fact about this film is that when they shot around LA, they were in the real neighborhoods- neighborhoods even police try to avoid. In order to shoot there, the director of the film asked for the neighborhood's rivil gangs permission and invited them onto the set to play some of the parts of gang members.
The entire movie takes place in one day. I didn't want to see the movie at first because I thought, how are they going to fill in the time with interesting stuff if the movie is restricted to only one day? They did it and they did a great job.
Ethan Hawke plays a rookie cop who wants badly to become a part of the LAPD's inner-city undercover narcotics unit. To do this he must impress the corrupt head veteran, played by Denzel Washington. Hawke likes to play be the rules and is a prime example of a good cop, while Washington is as crooked as it comes. He feels no guilt because he believes in "street justice," which will make sure all the little guys pay for their crimes. Washington is only after the "big" fish.
Hawke is faced with an internal struggle with guilt and the external pressure of Washington telling him that in in order to be a good cop one has to let go of the naive, play by the rules, rookie mentality. That is all Hawks conscience is supposed to be- a naive, play by the rules, rookie mentality.
As the story goes on, every action, everything said comes back to play. The line of good guy vs. bad guy, enemy vs. friend is always fuzzy.
I loved this story and unlike with most movies, I was satisfied with this films ending. I recommend it.
