what concession stand item? What is the one (or more!) thing that you absolutely MUST have to eat or drink while watching a movie? Is it a particular brand of whatever it is? If it's popcorn, must it be buttered? Do you have an opinion on the popcorn of today vs that of 10 or more years ago (for anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, there IS a difference!!! They changed the way they make it for "health" (!) reasons, so it's not nearly the same!) It's time for intermission, so tell us what you think about one of the most important things in the theater - the FOOD!

M&Ms. They're very addictive. Drinks are sort of habitual too. Terry

Jujubes! What ever became of Jujubes?! Used to be, one of the main reasons to GO to a movie was to eat Jujubes. You're rght, Linda - the popcorn IS different. It used to smell better, too. Remember (Nah, you're probably way too young) the giant tubs - feed 6-7 people? Remember dropping one? Phthffffath!! And the ushers (What were they?) chasing you out of the theater for popcorn fights!! Not just the popcorn, Linda; the whole movie-going experience has changed a lot. Then there were drive-in's - now THERE was a whole other world!

Good, then I'm NOT crazy for thinking things are different! Oh, I wish I could have been around in the drive-in days. I keep saying that I was born in the wrong decade. One of these days, I'm going to find out why I'm here now, instead of when I feel like I would have really fit in with things. I have nothing in common with the music, culture, attitudes, values,... of this present time period. I want the drive-ins, the poodle skirts, the (good old) rock and roll, the family values,.... You're right, I don't remember those huge tubs of popcorn, either! How dare the ushers (I haven't even SEEN an usher in I don't know how long!) throw you out for popcorn fights! You know, when I was growing up (in my teens), my parents bought a popcorn machine. A fairly good sized one - looked like one from the old theaters. I remember having popcorn every night. We used (I think it was) coconut oil. Whatever it was, it was in this huge tin and was congealed. It made the absolute best popcorn ever - it was just like movie popcorn used to be. When they moved, they sold it to the people who bought the house.

Pop corn always used to have a much better texture to it. I don't know how to explain it.. it was fatter. The kernels were just bigger and fluffier. Now they're harder and stick between your teeth too easily. And the butter isn't as good as it used to be. Sigh. Movies just aren't worth going to nowadays *grin*

Your right Catherine movies aren,t worth going to now. Back in the 40's and 50's those were the good years. Mom would make a grocery bag full of popcorn and the neeighbor kids would head out for the local theater, up in the balcony and sit back and watch a whole bunch of cartoons a serial and then a great western with Hopalong Cassidy or Red Ryder and Little Beaver or Lash Larue or maybe a good old Bowery Boys or Abbot and Costello comedy. Ah yes those were the good years.

Well gillyharold you got me waxing nostalgic now, I was with you going to the local theatre and sitting in the balcony, but I loved the great B horror movies of the 60's like Bucket of Blood, or The Screaming Skull, Fiends without a face, scared the you know what out of me at the time, but when I see them now I just laugh boy were they bad! (but fun) [This message has been edited by argus9 (edited 10-11-1999).]

Where I grew up (in the 70's), we had a drive-in about three miles from my house. My sisters and I all had to have those jawbreakers that are really little and come in a weird aqua-colored box. Our favorite part of the movies (when they still showed double-features!) was the cartoon intermission...especially the part where a little cartoon scientist says, "Oh, hello dere. Let me show you my new inwention." Nowadays, I'm strictly a MilkDuds and Dr. Pepper gal. And the drive-in was destroyed about ten years ago by a windstorm.

Back in the 60's (oh, so long ago now) we used to roll jaffas down the aisles. I don't know if you have jaffas in the US ... they're orange coated chocolate balls and they made a pretty good racket when a box was spilled on the wooden floor. The smell of popcorn still gets me in but it is *nothing* like the old days. And more of it gets stuck in your teeth too.

Popcorn is the one thing I can't do without at the movies. Gotta get the huge size to share with my partner. Have popcorn wars with each other. What's with that 'golden topping'? What happened to real butter, and not just on top, but throughout. There is one drive-in left in my town, but they might be closing soon, sob!!!

I can remember going to the Saturday matinee for seventy-five cents and spending the whole afetrnoon there watching a double feature. Might have been a Roy Rogers flick or House On the Haunted Hill with Vincent Price. What was nice too was there was a candy store about two doors away so you could "stock up" before you went in. BTW LindaK29, I remember those little aqua boxes of jawbreakers. What I miss MOST about going to the movies though are the cartoons and the newsreels, but most of all I miss the BIG screen. The new theaters have screens that aren't much bigger than a wide screen television. Seems like they rely on the sound systems to bring people in these days. I guess speakers take up less room than screens.

I'm not familiar with jaffas Dreamweave but those little jawbreakers that LindaK29 spoke of roll really well too. I think that JuJubees were invented by the American Dental Association to drum up a little business. NOTHING could pull out a filling like those things!

A movie isn't a movie without a big bag of popcorn. In fact, I can't even watch a video or TV movie without it. And my weight can attest to that! BTW, there is a city about 10 miles from where I live where there is a drive in !! Of course, due to our Canadian weather, it is only open in the summer months, but you should just see the teenagers there! My daughters, just out of their teens, said it is the "coolest" place to see a movie. Ah, the good old days ------------------ Veni, Vedi, Visa. I came, I Saw. I did a little shopping. I'm just trying to imagine having nachos at the movies! Why is it that cinema vendors feel that we movie-goers need to imbibe such copious quantities of liquid? Would we normally be able to drink that much even over a couple of days? Yet we can only choose from extra large, huge and gigantic! Is this just in case we have dropped in after running the local marathon and need to replace a few fluids?

Well as for the drink size question posted above.... I think that they give you such huge amount because the popcorn dehydrates you. Personally... I just share my drink with another person.
