Hi. I was just wondering when the Harry Potter category would be re-opened. Somebody told me that the editors sometimes re-open categories that are closed to new submissions. It`s just that I really want to make another quiz and I have lots of good material for a Harry Potter quiz. Please help me!!!!!!!!!!

Yikes ! Can there remotely be anything left to ask about Mr. Potter, The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, or "Charmed" (episodes 1 through 974, each one specifically)? Just wondering *tee hee*...

Usually when a category is closed, it doesn't get re-opened.

See this post about closed categories

It is at the editors' discretion if a category is to be closed or restricted.

It`s just someone told me that they would "have to wait until they re-open the Harry Potter category again" in a post.

I think there probably is a case for deleting poorly made quizzes, which have little or no interesting information and don't comply with present funtrivia standards, then allowing them to be replaced by better quality quizzes. I appreciate this would require time and work, and maybe the co-operation of original quiz authors, who if they are still funtrivia members, could be first given an opportunity to update their quiz.
This could be a method of re-opening some closed categories, but as I'm not an editor it's easy to suggest this.

Ginny perhaps rather than a straight HP quiz on the books or movies you could find another angle on Harry? Use one of the aspects of the books or stories you really like as a starting point rather than an end point. I'm racking my brains to think of an example, as my Potter knowledge is not what it could be, but owls come to mind. Or more broadly the different animals which appear (probably the 'real' ones would be easier to deal with, but the fantasy ones could open up some interesting possibilities!)

Now, before you groan and say it sounds boring and just like school (I'm not too old to remember what it was like - yet!) you might be surprised at how interesting researching topics can be, and what surprising information you find along the way.

I, for one, am really impressed with your enthusiasm and the way you obviously took on what the editor said about your first quiz and made the changes needed (otherwise it wouldn't have been put online!) I do think you're fighting a losing battle over getting closed categories re-opened. The editors have been around the site a long time and see a lot more of the big picture than it is possible to as a player/writer, and they have good reasons for making the decisions they do. And everyone wants to see new quizzes online, just not about the same old things in the same old way!

I hope this might give you some ideas.

There is a difference between closed and restricted categories.
If a category is closed no quiz will be considered, no matter how good. If a quiz is restricted there are certain requirements that have to be met to have a quiz considered, and these differ slightly from category to category. I'd suggest that you read these requirements for each one. Most require that the quiz writer have at least 5 other quizzes online, so that all the conventions have been already learned and the quiz needs very little editing, and that all questions be completely original, with no repeats or near repeats.
When 'H.P. and the Half Blood Prince' was released, the category in general was opened for a short time. I wouldn't count on it being opened again until the next book is released, and maybe not even then.
Sorry.

Thank you so much Ing, I will make some quizzes about the animals. I`ll go find a category for that! Oh, and thanks for the compliment.

Skunkee, then I can`t wait for the seventh book even more. Hopefully they will open it.

Um, if it's a quiz about Harry Potter, it still belongs in the Harry Potter subcategory. If it's just about the animals *in* Harry Potter, it wouldn't belong in, for example, the Animals category or such because the quiz would belong in Harry Potter.

I've had people who have tried submitting quizzes on tv shows like The Simpsons (which is a restricted subcategory in Television) to Entertainment's TV&Movies Mixture, General's Themed and other places when the quiz still belongs in the subcategory in Television. If you have a question on quiz placement, as an editor or post the question in the forums. But especially for something like this, I wouldn't start the quiz only to find out it does belong in that closed subcategory and all the work you did was for nothing because the quiz will never see the light of day.

Oops, well spotted Ladymacb!

Ginny in re-reading your post I think you might have misunderstood what I meant. Not a quiz about "the animals in Harry Potter" - like Ron's gerbil or whatever it was - but a quiz on a type of animal which might have been in HP. I thought you might find that some of the things which interest you in HP could be interesting outside of HP too!

Sorry for the confusion, but still go and write a great quiz!

OK, Thanks. I`ll research an animal and get some good questions on it.
Thanks, Ing, Skunkee and Ladymacb.

Ginny- for some examples of what is being talked about as a possibility for your quiz, please see the first five quizzes in the category Literature- Specific Subjects & Themes : Children's Literature. You will find quizzes on topics such as religious controversy over Harry Potter, the use of Greek and mythological names in the novels, the derivation from mythology of monsters and people mentioned in HP, etc.

You will also notice- and this is really the important part- that the writing level of these quizzes is at a very different level from those in the For Children category. These quizzes are written for adults, not children, and are held to a much higher standard for interesting info and completeness.

The Henry Potter category is not closed for ever, and will occasionally be open, but only for the submission of quizzes that show originality. There is always room for a quiz that takes a new approach. In response to demand by some players who consider they have created such a quiz, the Harry Potter category will reopen for the submission of quizzes at the end of November.

Re the above from Crisw, that's not actually what I meant, in fact I didn't know about that particular category (I might go and have a look now, it does sound interesting).

But I have just reminded myself of the title of this Forum and that, of course, I am not an Editor. As it perhaps isn't the place for "just trying to offer ideas", I apologise once more for any confusion I might have unwittingly caused, and shall go and work on writing my own quiz!

Caitlan you must be more patient when asking a question. Editors live all over the world, not just in Australia. You ought not ask the same question over and over, you only left just over an hour between the last two posts, that isn't long especially as it would have been in the middle of the night for America and Canada. The editors are all volunteers and cannot always visit Funtrivia every day - you need to wait until the editor who has the answer to your question is online - and no, I can't tell you who it will be nor when. As I said, just have patience.

Ing made a very good point, although some members who are not editors reply in this forum it is only the editors who can give answers with authority. It can be very confusing to members who do not know who is, or is not, an editor especially when the information is conflicting. You will notice that I rarely answer questions in this forum, I am not an editor and although I might know the answer I leave it to the editors to respond. Some of our editors make it clear in their replies that they are editors, that is very helpful.

I am really sorry! I put up the first post and then went off the site, lost track of time and put up another one. I am so so sorry! I didn`t realise.

Not all editors have information about all categories either. I edit in Movies, and have no idea when For Chilren plans to next open Harry Potter. I can only speculate based on past practice.

I have now set the dates for the submission of new Harry Potter quizzes. The Harry Potter category will be open from November 21 until November 30. Only quizzes showing originality and following all category instructions will be considered.

So, those wishing to submit one should be spending the intervening time perfecting their quiz, and playing the Quizmaker Tuneup quizzes, (to be found in the General category).
