Well, let's start that thread, then.

Gosh, so many wonderful movies to choose from.

The Shop Around the Corner
In the Good Old Summertime
Philadelphia Story
An Affair to Remember
Easter Parade
The Sheik
Daddy Longlegs
Meet Me in St. Louis
Rebel Without a Cause
Gone With the Wind
It Happened One Night
Sunset Blvd.
It's a Wonderful Life
To Kill a Mockingbird

Oh, believe me, I could go on for hours - just too many more to list!

Oh Linda--pass the popcorn and the
raisonets! You've chosen some
wonderful films. I agree, the list
could go on and on. How about these:
The Grapes Of Wrath
How Green Was My Valley
A Man For All Seasons
To Catch A Thief
Singing In The Rain
Roman Holiday
The Ox Bow Incident
The Country Girl
Gigi
The Heiress
Spellbound
And for a three-hanky good cry, pass the kleenex and watch:
Waterloo Bridge
Penny Serenade
Now Voyager
Dark Victory
Anna Karenina
A great classic movie isn't stuck in any time period and it doesn't easily become dated. It continues to be involving and to give pleasure decade
after decade after decade.

I agree with Linda's observation that the old classic movies (particularly the romantic comedies and the musicals) had a quality which we don't find anymore (at least not very often). There was a charm and almost a naivete blended in with the sophistication and polish of the acting and the scripts. There was also a certain air of formality to the actors' appearance and manner. The characters were always well dressed and perfectly groomed.Their language contained no vulgarities. There was a
certain subtle air of elegance that removed these people from the mundane--and gave these movies some of their uplifting qualities. How much do you think we have suffered by making our movies more down to earth and "realistic"? For sheer entertainment and escapism were we better off before?

You bet we were, Chelseabelle! OK, so we get much better special effects today. What that means is that the actors can be more mediocre or outright bad, and be covered up by the FX. I (and I bet you) remember a day when actors had to actually ACT, and perform a drama (or comedy, or musical) which entertained us and took us away for a couple of hours from life's little (or big) realities. I don't need to fork over 7 or 8 dollars to listen to the same old mouth trash that I can get every day for free. As for sex in films, I suppose it's whatever trips your trigger, but a) I know how, I don't need the instructions, b) if I want to watch that kind of movie, I'll WATCH that kind of movie, c) I'm not much of a voyeur; if I can't participate, I don't really want to watch and d) for that kind of fee, I'd like to get a story-line I haven't heard/seen before. Of this stuff, I've seen and heard plenty.
We need more Humphrey Bogart/Danny Kaye/Hepburn-Tracy and like that. Least, that's my humble opinion, for what it's worth.

My favorite classic movies:
Casablanca
Maltese Falcon
North by Northwest
Vertigo
Rear Window
Dial M for Murder.

You can't beat black and white for giving a suspense movie the right feeling. Alfred Hitchcock could do it right.

Oh, Sypher. You don't have to be old to love the classics! I'm only 32 - I wasn't around in the days of Gable, Astaire, or Stewart.

Trust me - watch some of the ones that are mentioned on this list. You'll quickly find that they are wonderful movies. You'll see that the acting and sets far surpass what has been made in the last 30 years or so! For instance, watch Vertigo or The Maltese Falcon. Or, Harvey for some humor (NOT the recent one - the Jimmy Stewart one).

(I will agree, though, that The Godfather can be considered a "classic" - even though, timewise, it doesn't fit with the others mentioned. Great film!)

Sypher,
I haven't seen a majority of the movies listed previously either.
That's one reason I haven't commented in this thread until now.
Your choice of the Higlander is excellent.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and disagree with Linda1 on her recommendation of 'Vertigo.' Unless you already love Hitchcock, this movie may bore you to tears. When I saw it, I kept waiting for it to end. Just when you think it's going to end, it doesn't. And then, when you think it's going to end again, it still doesn't. I think it is the longest movie I've ever seen (with the exeption of Meet Joe Black).
My own choice for a "new" classic movie: When Harry Met Sally. I know it's been around awhile, but I still love it.

I think "The Graduate" is one of my favourite classics. Every time it comes on tv I try to watch it. I think the music is great in it. I also Like all the Alfred Hitchcock movies. Jimmy Stewart, Gregory Peck, Spencer Tracy all fantastic

I like a both modern and classic films.

Almost all Hitchcock are classic - INCLUDING vertigo. North by Northwest i superb (anything with Cary Grant). Bringing up baby is another piece of genius (an amusing gay reference - in its old meaning). Also most James Stewart films are superb.

The Third Man is my all time favourite - i have never been so blown away by a film. Orson Welles is ace in it (as in Citizan Kane).

But modern films are good too - the coen brothers films are superb, as are all of Richard Linklater's films except the Newton boys. Dazed and Confused is incredible, as is before sunrise and suburbia.

Also all the new muppet films are excellent.

Its great having diverse tastes - then you get to enjoy so much more.

I watched It's A Wonderful Life again yesterday, as I was preparing my Thanksgiving dinner. That movie is just terrific, and it hasn't become stale. The message--that everyone's life is important, because each of us impacts on so many other lives--is really timeless. And Jimmy Stewart was just superb.

buckrogers, The Princess Bride is a wonderful movie, but it's not quite as old as most of the movies mentioned in this topic. Check out our other topic--New Classic Movies--I think The Princess Bride certainly belongs on that list.

I love Anna and the King of Siam! But, not very many people know what I'm talking about when I say that I like it. I keep trying to get them to understand that The King and I (Yul Brenner's) was not, like everyone wants to think, the first done of that story!

Anyone want to tell Purple Fan my opinion on the Wizard of Oz?!! PF, if you haven't seen all my posts on that movie and book, be sure to check them out. There is, in my opinion, no better movie ever created than that. There never will be. You can't improve on the best!

Thought I would bring back this topic because so many classic films are on TV this time of year.I saw a great one the other night --The Time Of Your Life--with James Cagney, William Bendix, and Broderick Crawford.
And,on New Years Day, they usually show, The Best Years Of Our Lives--a real star studded golden oldie.

I just re-watched another great classic---
Come Back Little Sheba (Shirley Booth, Burt Lancaster)
Such an affecting story, with great performances.

Am I the only one around here who likes to keep watching these old, great movies?
