Just rented this and saw it. Did anyone else see it when it was in the theaters? What did you think?

Linda1,
I saw the movie a long while back. I thought it was a good one for my 3 daughters to see. I felt that it focused on how we tend to look on the outside of a person and that fear of our differences can blind us to the real person. He was such a sweetheart and fightend so many. His treatment from others altered his own belief system of himself. What did you think?
Sandlewood.

I've heard a lot of negative responses to the movie. That's one of the reasons I wanted to bring it up here.

I have to say that I enjoyed the movie. I felt so sad for him. He just looked different, but inside, he was a shy, timid little creature who just wanted what everyone wants - love and acceptance. I think the guys at the state home were so cruel to him. And, he even lost his one chance at romance. The girl saw beyond the appearance. She saw him as a human. The scene where he asks if she thinks he's ugly is so touching.

A question - could he always read people's minds, or was it just if he touched them? It seemed that it was only when he was holding her hand that he could feel her thoughts. When he let go, it looked like the bond was broken.

As a result of the movie, I did a little research on albinism. It is interesting. Yet, really, I have to say, again, that people who have this disorder are not really that different from anyone else. They feel, they cry, they laugh,.... They just have something in their appearance that sets them apart. But, then, we all have _something_ that makes us unique.

I'm glad your girls got the chance to see it. What was their opinion?

I like your statement that "His treatment from others altered his own belief system of himself." That statement hits it right on target.

Was also doing a little research on Sean Patrick Flanery out of the Powder makeup. (I'm 32 and single! You can't blame me for looking at the men!) My goodness gracious. There is a picture on one of the websites that you would absolutely not believe. This guy (if the picture is accurate) is so incredibly good looking. The picture looks like he's doing a James Dean (see Chelseabelle - I'm getting Dean into this thread, too!) look. He was also in several of the Indiana Jones series, but I haven't seen that in a long time.

Hi again Linda,
As far as my daughters are concerned. my eldest (20) did not like it at all. She has very low tolerence for mistreatment of any kind. It breaks her heart to see anyone hurt emotionally. She is very sensitive and tries not to show it. Alot of movies that I like she can't stand. My 16 year old daughter loved it. My 9 year old daughter kept yelling "Why are they treating him like that". I'd say I was pretty proud of my daughters to know that they have compassion and love in their hearts. I haven't seen the picure of him out of makeup though. My favorite movie has to be "Always" with Holly Hunter, Richard dryfus and John Goodman. What do you think of that one if you have it?

Hmmm.. this sounds familiar. Is that the movie with the manaquin-like guy, who has a white face, and is sort of locked away in this old castle? Or am I thinking of a totally different movie?

"Always" is a great movie, and a remake of the 1943 also-great "A Guy Named Joe", with Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunne and Van Johnson in the Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter and Brad Johnson roles. They're still Pete, Dorinda and Ted, but the older version deals with USAAF bomber pilots in WWII (same aircraft, too: the B-25 bomber used in both.)Ward Bond does John Goodman's "Al Yackey" character. If you liked "Always", you've gotta see "A Guy Named Joe" to see where the story came from. If your rental store doesn't have them, Amazon.com has 'em both. Both are worth buying if you're a collector. Linda - you like old movies; check it out. It's worth your time. Let me know how you liked it. Probably a 12-Kleenex picture.

Sandlewood, go here to see a pic of Sean out of "Powder" makeup:

Terry, "Powder" is an interesting movie. I'd like to see what your opinion of it is. Especially the treatment that he gets from others. I rewatched parts of it last night, and he's so vulnerable and shy. He's a genius, but that doesn't prevent him from feeling the same insecurities that we all do.

Can you believe it's the same guy???!!! Who would have ever guessed the man looked like THAT?!

And, you and your daughters can't have him. I've already claimed him for myself!

Linda,
Of course you can have him. I have a feeling that he is a little to young for me. I called my oldest daughter on the phone and gave her the web page. Now you will have to battle with her over him. My youngest daughter is in "LOVE" with angel from "Buffy The Vampire Slayer". I suppose she is coming of age. Wait till she sees the pictures I printed out of Sean. I have a feeling we will have a girls sleep-over this weekend with popcorn, cocoa and movies of Sean's!!!!

Gunslinger,
I will call blockbuster and see if they have "A Guy Named Joe", if so, I'll let you know what I think of it. Thanks for the correction of Richards last name. It didn't look right.I appreciate the history also. Sandalwood.

Gunslinger, I checked both Blockbusters and the local video rental here in town and not one video store has "A Guy Named Joe". I will keep checking. Maybe another town close by has it.

Yeah, sure! Like I believe _THAT_ promise!

(I just thought it might be a little more organized if each movie had its own "place" - just seems like it'd be easier to find what you're looking for later on or if you hadn't checked the forum in a while. That's why, in the Announcement (uh, people ARE reading that, aren't they?!) I urge people to put the title of the movie as the Subject Line - much easier in the long run!)
