A 71 year old man parked his car in Melbourne then died at the wheel. A parking warden placed a parking ticket on his vehicle having not noticed the dead man inside!

What's scary is that probably the only action that will come out of this is an enquiry into why it took 'several days' to book an illegally parked car!

Obviously it's a horrible thing for the guy's family to have to go through, but hopefully they possess the brand of humour which will appreciate having the story to tell in years to come...it has long been my wish to die in such a way that I make The Darwin Awards. While this story questions the contribution to the gene pool of the traffic warden rather than the actual deceased, I still reckon it could be worth an Honorable Mention!

As the car's windows were tinted and the drivers seat reclined, the body wouldn't have been that obvious, especially if there was strong sunlight reflecting from the windows. I reckon the traffic warden had nothing to be ashamed about and was just doing his/her job - which doesn't include examining the interiors of all cars ticketed.
To get an honourable mention in the Darwins, you have to do something really stupid, and ideally make a pretty good attempt to kill yourself, so this warden IMHO doesn't even make it to the start line.

Is it just me, or is anyone else getting flashbacks of Basil Fawlty?

After nine days in the car I guess he would have been a bit wiffy. Totally bizarre, we are talking about the car being in a busy shopping centre, not an isolated place.

Did the family not onotice that their 71 year old father/husband/brother had gone to a shopping centre about a week ago and just never come back? You would have thought that they would have sent out a search warrant for him or something...

He had been reported missing...

The man had been reported missing nine days earlier, according to Australian newspaper reports.

This is in the article on the BBC News website.

Look at the bright side. He will probably not have to pay the fine.

I wouldn't count on it! My dad died earlier this year and the hospital STILL sent HIM the bill! He died before he even GOT to the hospital!! My mom sent in $100 and said she'd pay the rest in full when she got his life insurance check. A few weeks later, HE got another bill saying if he didn't pay it, it would be turned over to collections. So I sent them a letter saying he had moved to Ft. Gibson Cemetary and gave them his plot number. lol

This story reminds me of the fate of the tragic actress Jean Seberg. She committed suicide in her car on a Parisian street and sat there for eleven days before she was 'discovered.'

Only in Paris.
