I know that this flick has been out for awhile but I managed to overlook it at the video store for quite some time. Seemed like there was always something newer that I hadn't seen yet or another movie that would catch my eye. This past weekend I decided to give it a look. What a good movie! You can actually sit and watch it with your kids without feeling uneasy about the language or sexual content. I'm sure that someone else out there has seen it and I'm curious as to what your opinion might be. -JM- ------------------ Growing older but not up…

I saw October Sky in the theater when it first came out as part of a double feature. It honestly was one of the best movies that I have seen in a long, long time. Great acting, fairly moving storyline, and a nice fuzzy ending. Yeah, if you haven't seen it yet, see it. Terry

Bringing this topic back up to the top as well. I saw this over the Christmas holidays. What a wonderful tear-jerker. Big thumbs up on it. If you haven't seen it, do.

I'm sorry but i thought the only merit tothis movie was that it was based on a true story, because that means that there was less bad writting than if it were all made up. I go into more detail on the worst movies post. I wish i had see the movie more recently so that i could remember all the problems i had with it. It just seemed very typical, uninnovative, and uncreative. Granted i like some movies that fit this same desription. but, this wasn't on eof them. ------------------ When life gives you a lemon, wing it right back and add some lemons of your own. -Calvin(Bill Watterson)

HiYa Fortunata! Nice to be missed. In regards to October Sky, there isn't anyone in this movie that you would recognize by name but please don't let that deter you from renting it. I'd be very interested in what you think of it and I would be willing to bet that you won't be disappointed. -JM- ------------------ Growing older but not up…

I liked this movie. For some reason my dad and brother just loved it--I think it was the model rockets that did it for them. The acting was good. I would have liked to see a little more character development on the kid's friends. But yeah, it's a great family movie and I recommend it.

Hey Jo, how you been?? Sorry I haven't been around too much lately but I have been checking in from time to time. Sand, thanx for the reply. I think that your dad and brother probably appreciated it a little more because it did center on four guys and maybe the subject matter was something that men could identify with more than women. Having said that however, I think that this was just a good family movie that any age or gender can appreciate. Hey, there's not that many of those out there these days! -JM- ------------------ Growing older but not up…

No way, Jo! I really do check in but my work load has increased by a factor of two and I can't seem to find the time that I had before. I'll be back the first chance that I get once things let up. Hope it won't be too long! -JM- ------------------ Growing older but not up…

I enjoyed the movie too, but the book was much better. There were a lot more details about the boys' struggle to learn the necessary math, for example, that I found interesting.

Oops, forgot to mention that the book that the movie is based on was called "Rocket Boys", by Homer Hickam, Jr. It was then called "October Sky" in later releases after the movie came out.

Thanks for giving us that info, essaychess! I hadn't realized it was a book first - I'll have to read it.

Thanx for the input essaychess. Seems that I knew that from when they ran the credits after the movie ended. I'm a great one for actually reading those things. Glad that you liked the movie. -JM-

Fortuna - There are some people in the movie that you might recognise. Laura Dern was in Rambling Rose, Blue Velvet, Fat Man & Little Boy and Jurasic Park. Chris Cooper has been in Lone Star, A Time to Kill, The Horse Whisper and American Beauty. You might even recognise Elya Baskin from 2010, Moscow on the Hudson, Austin Powers & Air Force One. This was one of my favorite films of the year. I was hoping that Cooper & Dern would receive Oscar nods in the supporting catagories and that it would get a best screenplay from another source. Not to be this year, alas. [This message has been edited by Cohalen (edited 02-17-2000).]

I Stand corrected. It did get the nod for best screenplay adaptation. I hope it gets it, but it's against stiff competition.

I think that movie was leaning towards the boring sidebut it was a good family movie.I cried at the end [editing this part to take out the "spoiler" for those who haven't seen the movie yet] ------------------ An unbreakable toy is useful for breaking other toys.
