I've got to agree with the posts above that point out this last years bad movies. Summer
1999 has got to hold a record for hypeing
films that can best be described as unmitigated dreck. Blair Witch Project: Biggest ripoff of the film going public in years. Will go down in history as the first
movie to really capitalize on the internet as
a hype vehicle. Eyes Wide Shut: Biggest disappointment of the summer. All the talent
and time that went into this one should have produced better results. Kubrick overdirected, overproduced, picked nits for years and still delivered an extremely boring movie. Cruise and Kidman's acting skills are apparent but at times they just seem to be going through the motions, kind of like they wish the damn thing would end too. Kubrick
lost his touch 20 years ago, this will probably be remembered as the worst final movie of any great director's career. Wild Wild West: Is there no role that the Hollywood bigwigs think is wrong for Will Smith? There used to be a thing called casting. Would have rather watched a rerun of the old TV show. Lots of snap and crackle, but no POP!
But, I've got to say the worst movie I watched this year has got to be "Sweet Sweetback's Badass Song". Early '70's Shoot 'em up written, directed by, produced by, and starring Melvin Van Peebles, Mario's dad. This is billed as the first Blaxploitation movie ever made. How the genre ever got off the ground after this is a mystery to me.
Film students should me required to watch this clunker as an example of what not to do!
The only bright spot, the movie's tagline, "This movie was made for all the Brothers and Sisters who have had enough of The Man" The syrup of ipecac of the film world! Don't rent it. Don't watch it. Dont even think about it.
If you're curious though, and want to check out this genre, try "Shaft" or "Superfly". at least they have good music.

Certain movies that are purposely made crappy to please a certain audience i do not count. Such as mafia, I haven't seen it, but i did see the preview and knew it wasn't exactly the brain titalating blockbuster of the year. What gets me are movies that have been done a thousand times already. One such film was October Sky. Every single part except the rockets were hollywood cliches, but the rockets were used to help fulfill the cliches.. It was quite a while ago i have this movie, but i think i still know how it worked.

Younger brother living in the shadow of his older brother's success.(seen it)

Father doesn't have time to dream because he needs money to provide right now.

No one believes in the kid except his teacher.

This movie was predictable at every spot. There are many more that i onlyt remember partially so i am not listing.

But i do remember that when the teacher looked out the window form her hospital bed she saw the rocket blasting off and she smiled.

During this supposed to be a touching moment my date and I both laughed our heads off...we were in disbelief of how the movie was able prove us wrong jsut when we thought tath it couldn't get any cheesier.

Also...First wives club sucked.

Death Staar-- The Stuff is on my all-time top 100 list, and I just paid way, way too much for a copy on ebay last week.

To those who are anti-Thin Red Line, let it be known I'm very much in your camp, but let me say-- READ THE BOOK. The movie becomes even worse a travesty when you realize that the novel (by James Jones) is one of the great classics of American war fiction. Unbelievable. Excellent. Wonderful.

And now, on to my worst film... I've only ever stopped the tape in the middle of a movie twice, so I rank the two of them as co-worst films ever. One was Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (was supposed to be funny and bad, but lacked any humor at all) and the other was a bad Dennis Hopper film called Let It Rock. I love Dennis Hopper, but I couldn't make myself sit through this one.

While we're at it... as to the Blair Witch Project, I think a lot of people missed the point of all the hype. The Blair Witch Project was not about three kids lost in the woods; it was about the creation and execution of an urban legend. The hype _was part of the movie_, it just wasn't on the screen. I've always likened it to being at summer camp the day of the big bonfire everyone sits around while the counselor tells ghost stories. All day, the counselors tell you how scary the stories are going to be, how you're gonna wet the bed that night, etc. etc. Hopefully, by the time any child is old enough to attend summer camp, s/he knows that campfire stories aren't real. But that doesn't mean you can't have a whole bundle of fun getting yourself all worked up over whether the guy with the hook is going to get into your cabin and butcher the bully who sleeps by the window, right?

That's what BWP was all about. However, the filmmakers (wisely) didn't want to spill the beans that it wasn't real, and more importantly that it wasn't meant to be a horror film. So a lot of people who went in not realizing what was going to happen, and with preconceived notions of what they were getting, ended up disappointed. But the film's effect is probably better shown by the fact that the only film to stir up more discussion on every list I'm on was The Sixth Sense (which was just plain brilliant all the way around).

Bright Lights, Big City with Michael J. Fox has to be one of the worst films ever.
It never even gets started before it's over and there's no story at all from start to finish.
Also, sorry to disappoint all you Matrix fans out there, but that was utter garbage.
Why didn't Keanu just take the other pill and save us all the trouble?

I have a very high tolerance level for all kinds of dreck, but the first movie I ever walked out on was in college. It was supposed to be a great "art" movie, I think it was "Cries and Whispers." But when it started off with a woman putting pieces of a broken glass into her private parts, I figured I didn't need to find any more of a message there. I also didn't stay around for much of Woody Allen's "Manhattan," found it pretentious and self-serving. So I really can't criticize them as the worst movies I ever SAW. Unfortunately, I can't for the life of me remember the name of that movie, but it was something like "Gangsters" and Richard Grieco and a bunch of other were in it. It was the only time I've ever fallen asleep at a movie!
Some movies are so bad, they're good. Like the Ed Wood movies, and stuff like "Pink Flamingos" and "Hairspray." I've become fairly selective in recent years (opting in part to wait until they're out on video, which isn't a good idea for special effects extravaganzas), so if I think a movie is going to be bad, I don't waste my time or money. It's just when I'm expecting something to be great because of all the hype, and it lays an egg in my lap, I get really, really disappointed.

Worst one I've seen lately has to be "Three Kings" which I thought just reeked. Luckily I didn't pay for the ticket for that one (the joy of taking school cinema trips). The other one which was a big disappointment recently was the X files movie (altough I think that was bad mostly as the series is beginning to struggle). I didn't pay for that ticket either (a friend worked at the cinema) --- perhaps I should start paying for my own tickets and then all the films might be good!

Hey Thiv-- if you don't tell us what the movie was, how will we know what to avoid on our next trip to the video store?

butterflysm - I didn't miss the point of the movie because I actually managed to stay in the cinema all the way through.
The fact that at least a dozen people walked out of the cinema after less than an hour only goes to reassure me that I'm not the only one who thought it was rubbish.
The problem was, after all the hype, it was junk.
It was an excellent idea but the way it was put together just did not do it for me.
The whole thing was nothing more than a special-effects extraveganza trying to conceal a thin storyline, terrible script and Keanu Reeves' as-wooden-as-ever acting.
Neither did it make me re-consider my perceptions of reality.
After all, if all this was an artificially created reality, such a load of junk would never have been released.

Very Bad Things (Christian Slater - who I usually love, but I had to walk out it was so bad)
All the Home Alone movies.
Three Kings - what a ridiculous plot.

The two movies I have walked out on: "Cool World" and "Wyatt Earp". Another I would've walked out on if I wasn't with friends "Copland". Talk about your stinkers!

I agree, some movies are so bad, they're wonderful. The worst I've ever seen #1 "Nana" pure drivel and "Caligula". I should have known, considering it was produced by Penhouse, but I thought I was going to indulge my passion for Roman history and it had Peter O'Toole and John Gielgud.

Any movie featuring Madonna is total crapola! When's she going to realize, that she has no acting ability?

I tend to like almost every movie I see, but sometimes horrible movies come along that even I can't stand. One of the worst movies I've ever seen was "She's the One". It was supposed to be a comedy, but all it did was just drag on for two hours. I watched it with my friends and we got so bored we turned it off. Another horribly bad movie was "The Mod Squad" with Claire Danes. 'Nuff said

"Independence Day" is certainly the worst. The president saving the world from the evil aliens? What a stupid scenario.

I will probably start a riot , but "Pulp Fiction" has got to one one the worst movies I have seen in a long time, We sat thru it waiting for something to happen, nothing did.

Also "The Piano" is bad, the fastest in that movie was the axe falling when her finger got cut off, since my wife chose that, she has been banned from picking anything at the video store.

I have two movies that I haven't seen on this message board yet. One is boring, the other drivel. The boring one is "Turtle Diary," a late '70s or early '80s film about two mousy English people who steal a turtle from the zoo and set it loose in the ocean. It takes them 2 hours to do this.

The other film, which is my all time most-hated flick, is "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," with Kevin Costner. The only other performance that can come close to matching Costner's disregard for proper accent is Keanu Reeves in "Dracula."

DOGMA was the worst movie I have seen in at least a year. It was sooo boring, and stupid. Noone in the movie acted worth beans. I have seen better high school plays. Anyone else agree? Just plain horrible. I had to watch it to the end out of morbid curiousity. I didn't think it could continue to get worse but it did.
