There are some really wonderful
classic movies that turn up on TV every year at Christmas time.I already got to see It's a Wonderful Life on Thanksgiving morning. But some of my other favorites that I am looking forward to seeing again are:

A Christmas Carol(the version with Alistair Sim)
The Bishop's Wife (Cary Grant,Loretta Young, and David Niven)
Penny Serenade (Cary Gant, Irene Dunne--I LOVE this movie)
The Holly And The Ivy (Margaret Leighton)--haven't seen this one in ages.
Miracle On 34th Street (the original)
The Lemon Drop Kid (Bob Hope)

What are your favorite classic Christmas movies? They don't have to be old films---they can be newer classics---as long as they are films you enjoy rewatching during the holiday season, that's what makes them a "classic" for you.

White Christmas. There has not been a christmas since i was 13 (12 years) that I have not watched this film to get me in the mood. It is an absolute classic - Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye are excellent, it has top tunes and a great story. You couldn't ask for more. I think Its a Wonderful Life is a better film, bur White Christmas is the Christmas film for me. Favourite bit - the guy running backwards up the stairs in the song 'Mandy'. How does he DO that?

Chelseabelle, I watch every Christmas movie that comes on T.V. each year. I love the Bishops Wife". I have It's a wonderful life on video and my sister and I get together and watch it together. It's almost time!!!

I get my popcorn and cocoa and just snuggle up, and tell everyone to hush while I am watching the movies.

We get the usual Christmas movies shown throughout the week but on British TV, they always show each year one of the following films......The Wizard of OZ (I know, Linda's favorite), The Towering Inferno or The Posiden Adventure.

Why o Why do they show these films at Christmas ? What do they have to do with Christmas ? And why every Year ?

You can always count on at least one of them being shown. OH plus a James Bond movie.

I know this is skating on thin ice with this subject but it is the closest one.

One of our dinosaurs is missing also always seems to be shown in the UK at Christmas. I'm not sure why.

I remember another reason i love White Christmas so much - the song SNOW. It is ace, and always makes me want top go sledging!

Good one Leprechuan, filmed in Cleveland, Ohio, my old stomping grounds. The departmnet store they used was Higbee's on Public Square in the heart of downtown.

Really a low bucks flick but there really is something unique and extremely funny about it. In many ways, I think we can identify with many of the things that happen and are said thoughout this movie. Growing up on streets that look EXACTLY like that, it may be even easier for me, personally.

Sypher,
They show the Wizard Of Oz over here too.
I'm not sure of the logic behind it though.
As for Towering Inferno and Posiden Adventure, aren't they both supposed to revolve around New Year's Eve? Could be why they show them during the silly season.

Sypher and Leprechaun, The Wizard of Oz is shown then because it is a Christmas gift to all of us from the TV networks. They know how very special and wonderful this movie is, so they schedule it to be shown at a special and wonderful time of the year. Does that help with your confusion?

I know this is a weird thing to have as a tradition, but Mom and I have gotten into the habit of watching Chevy Chase's Christmas Vacation. (For some reason, Dad hasn't adopted this tradition with us!) My parents have a Silver Persian, so that scene with the cat and the Christmas tree is kind of hard to watch! It's just a funny, light-hearted movie.

I also adore It's a Wonderful Life. No one can top Jimmy Stewart - he's incredible.

A Christmas Carol (Alistair Sim version.) Sim was made to be Ebenezer Scrooge. Even the older version with Reginald Denny doesn't come up to Sim's creation. Later re-makes probably did a good job with Dickens' story, but there's no Scrooge like A. Sim.

I back Cohalen's "Nightmare Before Christmas" and I'm little surprised that he didn't mention "The Ref" starring Denis Leary. I think that's a great x-mas movie.

Definitely, A Nightmare Before Christmas has to be one of my favorites! I also agree with CarolinaCarol on her choice of A Christmas Story..it´s hilarious. "You´ll poke your eye out!", FaRaRaRaRa, and the sexy lamp always crack me up. And How The Grinch Stole Christmas is priceless. If Dr.Seuss isn´t a classic then I don´t know what is!

Monkey thumbs-up to all of them.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and Scrooged with Bill Murray are pretty good movies.
