That's huckster and filmmaker Carl Denham (played by Robert Armstrong) psyching out the audience in the famous theater scene in "King Kong." Denham actually survives the rampage that follows, but we learn in "Son of Kong" (1933) that he's stuck with the bill for the great ape's temper tantrum.

That's Al Pacino's thesis statement in the title role of "Serpico" (1973), the story of a clean New York cop in an era when that didn't pay off too well. Pacino earned his second straight Best Actor nomination, but perhaps more important, established himself as having the range to play both animated ethnic criminals and animated ethnic police officers.

That's Alec Baldwin in his whirlwind role as Blake the Nightmare Boss in David Mamet's "Glengarry Glen Ross" (1992), a great adaptation of Mamet's profane, Pulitzer-prize winning play. Blake is trying to get his real estate team into gear, but his methods have mixed results.

That's Al Pacino from "Scent of a Woman" (1992) as the blind and very cranky Lt. Col. Frank Slade. In this scene, he's contemplating suicide over the objections of his young companion, played by Chris O'Donnell.

That's Roberto Benigni describing to his young son the "rules" for survival in a concentration camp in 1997's "La Vita e' Bella" ("Life is Beautiful"), one of the best films of the last decade. In addition to its Best Picture nomination, the film garnered Benigni a Best Actor win and nominations for direction and writing.

That's Charlie Sheen as the P.O.V. character Chris Taylor in "Platoon" (1986), Oliver Stone's morality play set against the Vietnam War. Taylor's platoon has just lost a man and is looking for revenge wherever they can find it.

That's Albert Brooks as sardonic newsman Aaron Altman in James L. Brooks' ingenious "Broadcast News" (1987). Brooks is describing the tendency of his romantic rival and professional foil, played by William Hurt, to ease people into lowering their standards. The movie earned 7 nominations but won no Oscars.

That was paraphrasing one of the many pearls of wisdom contained in the "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" is pub-crawling protagonist Ford Prefect. Posing as an out-of-work actor for the last 15 years, Ford stumbles into a job as a researcher for the Universe's best-selling guide book. The British love to marry their oddball comic sensibility to their science fiction, and Douglas Adams (who dreamed up this idea while lying in a field as an out-of-work actor) has helped to cement this reputation.
