A northern bottle-nosed whale has been seen swimming up the river Thames, and has passed by the Houses of Parliament in central London. This species, I understand, resides normally in the Arctic or Atlantic off the continental shelf, so it's appearance in a busy river like the Thames is extremely unusual. It is being closely followed and observed by experts, and there is no sign that it is either weak or sick. If it progresses up river it may accidently beach itself and die, unless some sort of rescue can be made - very difficult with an animal of this size.
I wonder if perhaps it might leave a message near Parliament, maybe engraved on a crystal ball, saying something like 'So long and thanks for all the fish'!

"thanks for all the fish" LOL.
It may not be sick now but the Thames isn't really the cleanest waterway is it?

I live in Philadelphia, and we've had a few whales swimming up the Delaware River. And I believe we've also had a dolphin...but I'm not one hundred percent.

The scientists say that the whales and dolphins can become disoriented and swim off-course to a different climate, even if their usual hunting ground is artic water.

Thank god, now they can redirect the money and manpower to Iraq where they are desperately needed to repress the populace.

Seriously though, I have heard from several sources that wish to remain anonymous that the whale was in fact a card carrying member of Hamas with strong links to al-Qaeda on a spy mission up the river.

Some of the items used in its, sadly unsuccesful, rescue attempt are already for sale on e.bay. I've just heard the watering can which was used to damp the whales body, while it was out of water, has reached over £400.

Off the whale rescue topic and onto the whale vomit news...

Quote:

Whale vomit find may net $1m for family

A family on South Australia's west coast has discovered a rare specimen of whale vomit on the beach that is tipped to be worth over $1 million.

The specimen, known scientifically as ambergris, is sought after by perfume companies and worth about $US20 per gram.

The sample found on a beach near Streaky Bay weighs 14.75 kilograms.

Ken Jury, who is representing the family, says this is the first discovery of ambergris in South Australia.

He says the last specimen found in Australia was in Queensland.

"Two small pieces were found that I would suggest together would make up half the size of the one that's been found at Streaky Bay, and they realised something like $190,000 each," he said.

From here.

I always thought ambergris was found in the brain of the sperm whale. Im also under the belief that whale oil was and possibly still is needed in the production of atomic weapons. To do with viscosity and such. Is this true?

Heard the women who found it interviewed on radio this morning, she said "we've been looking for one for ten years, me and my husband".

Ten years? TEN YEARS???? I bet those two are a riot at dinner parties.

And they now have it in a safety deposit box.

The Thames whale apparently died of dehydration, believe it or not! These whales normally get most of their water from their diet of mainly squid. This young whale had had gone right off course, and must not have eaten for some time, hence the dehydration.
Strange that it couldn't just take a drink of water, even if it was from the Thames.

Possibly the final story in this 'twisted tale' is that volunteers directly involved in the attempted rescue of the Thames whale received over £300 in parking penalty tickets from London's vigilant traffic wardens!

Not a chance! Everyone having received a parking fine, would have to appeal individually, with very little chance of having the fines waived.
Only emergency services such as police, fire and ambulance would get exemption from parking fines.
