A friend from Australia will visit me very soon and I will show him around Southern Germany (where I grew up).

We also want to go to Prague for about three days. Since I've never been there myself it would be great to hear which places we should definitely check out.

We'll also go to the Netherlands. We have a friend in Amsterdam who will show us around there, but we'd like to go somewhere else as well. (The Hague, Rotterdam, or maybe a smaller town..) We only have three or four days for this, so we can't do too much, but any recommendation would be helpful.

Thanks.

I'm in a bit of a rush, so I'll get back to you later. For now, you might want to check out this thread about Prague.

Chris I forgot you were going back to Europe. I hope you are enjoying being "home" again!

Thanks for the link Leau!

Roos, it's great to be back home, see my family and friends and enjoy a proper winter, i.e. a winter with snow and in December/ January! (Just kidding!)
But I won't stay in Germany very long, because I'll move to London shortly.

By the way, sorry for posting in the wrong forum.

I remembered there had to be a thread about Prague merely because I was the one who started it back then.

As for sightseeing in the Netherlands... I wouldn't recommend going to Rotterdam, unless you like modern architecture. Most Dutch people associate Rotterdam with office buildings and industrial stuff. And they call it ugly. I'm not sure if I agree, but you'd be better off going to Utrecht or Den Haag. Or, if you don't necessarily have to stay near Amsterdam, Maastricht is nice. Old too. If you can give me a better idea of what kind of things you like doing (museums, shopping, pubs, etc), I might be able to give you a better advice.

Didn't Prague flood while you were there, Leau?

Yes, it sure did! Please don't remind me! Prague is a beautiful city but the last part of my trip I'd rather forget.

I guess our main focus would be museums, churches and the likes, and maybe some nice pubs for the evening
(hey, if an Aussie and a German travel together there has to be a pub involved )

I'm surprised to hear that about Rotterdam, but I think we'll take it off the list then. As I said before we don't have much time..
Oh, I just heard from my friend in Amsterdam, and she suggested we also check out Delft (I hope I remember that correctly ). She said it's quite pretty..

Rotterdam was heavily bombed in WW2, I think that accounts for the lack of historical buildings.

Your friend is right about Delft, it is pretty. So is Maastricht (which is a 2.5-hour trainride from Amsterdam), because it's really old. Utrecht is also nice for just the atmosphere and the buildings. Has a lot of pubs too.

Amsterdam has more of the "big city feel" to it though. Compared to cities like München and Köln the rest of our cities are villages!

It all sounds great! I actually can't believe I've never made it to the Netherlands before, after all we are neighbours..

Anyway, you gave me some really helpful tipps. Thanks a lot, Leau! I'll let you know where we went.
(By the way, my Aussie friend is a real city boy, so he's fascinated by small towns/ villages )
