Australian of the year: Ian Frazer who "has pioneered a vaccine for the human papilloma virus - which causes cervical cancer - a breakthrough that could wipe out the cancer." (daily tele )

Young Australian of the Year: Trisha Broadbridge whose husband of just a week died in Thailand in the tsunami. She's set up an educational facility and has been mentoring young people in Australia since.
(
Senior Australian of the Year: Sally Goold for her work in expanding the number of Aborignal and TSI nurses in the hospital system.

Local Hero of the year (is this a new one? ) : Toni Hoffman who was the 'whistle blower' in the Dr Patel cases at Bunderberg Hospital.

Can't complain about any of that.

Judging from MotherGooses's posting in another thread, presenter John Laws should have been a candidate.

If Laws was ever elected Australian of the Year, I would move to New Zealand, or Mongolia, or....

He calls himself 'the worker's friend', whilst pulling in a multi-million dollar income- hypocrisy in the extreme.

All the other winners are great choices!

What about an FT Australian of the year?
Who qualifies and why?

I suppose I swing wildly on the John Laws situation depending on the controversy of the day. If I agree I like him, if I don't I agree with Ozzz.

FT Australian of the year? Me, 'cause I'm good.

Well I`m just delighted that it wasn`t a sport celebrity, though I would prefer anyone over John "big mouth" Laws.
