Hi all.
I'm new to fun trivia and I just wanted to introduce myself.
My name is Erin, and I live in New Zealand. I found this site when I searched for a quiz in google.
I look foward to meeting some of you, and I look foward to posting!

Edited to remove age.

Welcome to the forums!

It's not a wise idea to post your age on the internet. Read this post from Sue (sue943), the chief moderator (the part about safety primarily) :

In reference to the 'teen chat room' - we just ask that no chatspeak is used. It's not about teenages as such it just that this is the group that would use it more often. There is the chat boards in the main part of the site that cater more for the younger members, although they are welcome here too but the discussions in the chat boards are more suited to the younger ones.

We don't, nor do you. That is one reason we discourage our members to give personal details to other members, and that includes ages. When a moderator sees a person giving their age, or certain other information they will remove it from public view and ask the person posting such information to be careful.

Even with the avatars you need to be careful. I know I show my photograph on mine and so do a few other people but if I lived somewhere like the US then I wouldn't. Where I live we only have a few members of FT, and they are not in the forums. The chances of anyone physically stalking me are remote.

You can see a safety section in the Guidelines posted at the top of The Funtrivia Lounge.

Just disclosing an age is no guarantee that people are teens and not middle-aged anythings.

I display my picture in my avatar too Sue, although we tend to all look the same to most people, so I think I'm safe as well!

So, posting your pic is safe, but posting your age isn't? I really don't get it.Maybe i'm just a dumb teenager, who knows? *shrug*

Posting you pic is safe only if you live in a small community where there aren't likely to be many other people online, and everyone pretty much knows everyone else anyway.
And to be perfectly blunt - it's probably safer (sorry Sue) at Sue's age then it is at your age too.
The sad reality is, there are lots of sexual predators out there who will sit up and take notice when you say that you're young. There was a case not that long ago around here where a teenager arranged to meey someone she knew from a chat room, and when she actually got there, he was 20 years older than he'd claimed and he raped her.
And that's only one type of problem that you can pick up by divulging too much information on the net. Read some of the other threads to see what else can happen.

No, that is NOT what I am saying. What I am saying is that YOUNGER members ought not post their age OR photos. I am 58 and there is no problem with me stating that, I am not vulnerable, teenagers are. If I lived anywhere other than where I actually live then I wouldn't be publishing my photo here either.

I would like to mention that the age range in the forums is actually higher than you might be used to, we have very few members posting who are under 20, we have plenty over 30, 40, 50, 60. Most of the younger members tend to stick with our Chat Boards with people more their own age and with similar interests.

Oh come Sue, that's not always true. I'm not quite twenty.

The Chat Boards can be so dull sometimes (no offense to the chat board moderators).

I don't see a piccy thread here, not where I've looked anyway. So there's not really a place for people to post their pics besides from their avator. I get the point, be safe on the internet, sexual predators will stalk young girls of my age, etc etc.

That is because we don't have a 'piccy thread' We don't do pictures. Adult members can submit their photo to be included in the scrapbook, we don't publish photos which are of young members.

Before you ask, no we don't know that the photo submitted is actually the member, yes a photo of a female could actually be submitted by a man. We just don't publish photos of people who look very young.

I think the fact that a person doesn't understand the safety guidelines is the best reason why they should follow them. In the end, internet safety is all about taking calculated risks. Typically, it is younger people who do not fully understand the risks they take, since that is what young people do (myself included, when I was young). That, and younger people are more at risk of being a target. However, even our older members here know from experience that older people can be targets as well. So it isn't just age that's the indicator. It is understanding of the factors involved and the variables to those factors. That's why someone who questions the guidelines is exactly the one those guidelines are designed to protect.

If you didn't know that we don't permit images, despite it being in the rules, first it would be removed and you will be asked not to post images. Then your account gets closed if you take no notice once you have been asked not to do it. However, since you KNOW our policy, and if you posted an image despite me telling you now that we do not do images at FT (with the exception of the thread in Funtrivia Lounge which is a very special occasion) then your account would be closed without further warning.

Want to test it?
