The movie of the century was never made, though it was conceived. Yeah, yeah, I know, it's a cop-out... but I have a specific film in mind. And, oddly, in the hundred years before its release, it was never made-- and now three versions of it come out in one year.
Many of Shapespeare's plays have been made into film. In fact, all of them save one-- his finest, Titus Andronicus. While a few TV abominations appeared, the movie was never done for the big screen. However, independently of one another, THREE different production teams decided it was time to show the glory of Titus Andronicus on the big screen. Two of these have now been released-- Titus Andronicus (with Robert Reece in the title role) and Titus (with Anthony Hopkins as Titus). However, the most promising version has yet to see the light of day-- the Australian version, with Peter Wolstencraft (Pearls Before Swine) at the helm. It is presently filming.
That said...
Best movie of the century that actually got made and released: Return of the Living Dead (1985).
