I have a fixation with Nikola Tesla. Among his inventions is the Tesla Coil. Those of you who know about electronics are sure to know what I'm talking about. What I'm wondering is, are there any practical uses for a Tesla Coil? I've seen them on TV shows a few times, but I can't figure out how someone would use one to do something other than create pretty sparks.

I found the following: Quote:
Two variations of the Tesla coil are found in everyday devices, the CRT display and the internal combustion engine. Every CRT type display (televisions, computer monitors, etc.) uses a small Tesla coil, usually referred to as a flyback transformer in this application, to provide the high voltage necessary to accelerate electrons from the electron gun in the narrow end of the picture tube to the phosphors coating the inside of the screen. An oil filled Tesla coil, known as an ignition coil, is found under the hood of all internal combustion powered automobiles. It provides the high voltage to fire the spark plugs.

What a fascinating man Tesla was. Loved greatly by the Serbian people and respected by the worlds scientific community.
I visited his museum whilst in Belgrade and spent an hour or so with my mouth agape at the genius of the man.
This photo was taken in the museum and this scan is of the entrance ticket showing the outside of the building.
I do recall that the guide handed several of us fluroescent light tubes and turned on one of Teslas` machines, the tubes lit up, lol I nearly dropped the one I was holding.

Thanks Sue! That is fascinating, Roos. I do recall reading that Tesla swore he could transmit electricity without wires. I've been fascinated by him for years, now I'm planning on doing some serious research into his life and his inventions. I had no idea that Tesla coils were used in internal combustion engines. Public library, here I come!

Tesla did a lot more than coils, which exploit existing science. His tower reference was supposed to use free energy to transmit messages, but was never finished in its full sized version and really needs to be revived to discover its true potential. This was just one of Tesla's attempts to extract energy from 'nowhere' and there is a huge book of all his work available from www.nexusmagazine.com

Luckily Nexus keeps many of its articles online, and that's where I found most of the data. Keelynet is another, there are heaps of free energy diagrams floating around the net, and some only need a small workshop to build. And with gas and oil running out the time has come to dig up all this fringe science as the mainstream has come up wanting.

Thanks for those links. I took and enjoyed both quizzes. Actually, I did better than I thought I would.

I came across a site tonight that reminded me of this post. I thought somebody might find it interesting. Tesla Downunder

I thought Testa Coils was a silent screen actress once married to Gilbert Roland.

Indie, you need to read the science fiction series by Catherine Asora, a physicist and ballet dancer who has become very popular. You'll see your beloved Tesla Coils there.
It's a great series and the lady in question actually wrote me a personal message thanking me for my comments on some of the aspects on a website.

I'll have to add those to my ever growing list of books I need to read. I have a huge list by now, but the upside is, I can't ever die, too much reading to do!

The Tesla coil technology is indeed related to the two instances in the article but the difference between an ignition coil/flyback from Tesla's technology is that Tesla used LC resonance, a form of sympathetic vibration. Another difference is that this resonance allowed his voltages to be at a very high frequency - 25kV from a teevee will knock you flat, 25kV from a small Tesla coil merely tickles. (I also believe the high frequncy of the Tesla coil forces the electric current to adhere to the skin effect literally, to flow through the skin of the person being shocked thereby bypassing the heart and thus being much less dangerous) There's a good Wikipedia article on Tesla coils. Likewise, I saw this monster in action at the '97 Survival Research Labs show in Austin. Amazing!
