Just popped in to introduce ourselves. We have been playing trivia for a few months and have finally got around to joining the forums-even though we do usually have a peek to see whats going on. Im Jill from Hartlepool, north east England and my partner is George from Glasgow in Scotland - hence the two for one deal because we usually play the quizzes together, although we are not always speaking by the end of it! So just a big hello to all fellow trivia players and will join in some forums soon.

Honestly Sue, you of all people should be able to tell a Scottish accent from an English one!
Welcome!

Ah yes, I recognise the Glasgow accent, the physiotherapist I had in my cardiac rehab classes kept telling us to stop blethering! Jill, does he call you 'hen'?

My parents were both from Glasgow, and my eldest sister was born there too.
My mom's been gone for a while, but there are people who still can't understand my dad, and he's been here (Canada) for over 50 years!

I am awfully sorry but when I think of the northeast I almost always start singing about little fishies on a little dishy, when the boat comes in! It shows my age but it stems from Family at War, at least I think that is what it was called - I was hooked and watched it every week.

Thank you all so very much for your kind welcome - there are too many to mention individually so group hug for you all

Im not sure what that programme was called Sue I think I remember some of it but I do remember the tune mainly from an advert for a company that specialize in frozed seafood, if thats any help??

You really are a friendly crowd on here and we're looking forward to spending more time just browsing around.

Welcome, Jill and George.

I think there was a programme called “When the Boat Comes In” (though I never saw it), and I’m pretty certain that that’s the name of the song that Sue is quoting from.

I always associate Tyneside with the Keel Row, to which my West Country mother used to sing “The cat’s got the measles, the measles, the measles: the cat’s got the measles, the measles got the cat.”

Yeah thanks TabbyTom thats the one I was thinking of, with James Bolam (I think). Thats all more Tyneside and we are closer to the Tees so are neither here or there really!

Come here, maw little Jacky,
Now aw've smoked mi backy,
Let's hev a bit o' cracky,
Till the boat comes in.

Chorus
Dance ti' thy daddy, sing ti' thy mammy,
Dance ti' thy daddy, ti' thy mammy sing;
Thou shall hev a fishy on a little dishy,
Thou shall hev a fishy when the boat comes in.

Here's thy mother humming,
Like a canny woman;
Yonder comes thy father,
Drunk - he cannot stand.

Chorus
Dance ti' thy daddy, sing ti' thy mammy,
Dance ti' thy daddy, ti' thy mammy sing;
Thou shall hev a fishy on a little dishy,
Thou shall hev a haddock when the boat comes in.

Our Tommy's always fuddling,
He's so fond of ale,
But he's kind to me,
I hope he'll never fail.

Chorus
Dance ti' thy daddy, sing ti' thy mammy,
Dance ti' thy daddy, ti' thy mammy sing;
Thou shall hev a fishy on a little dishy,
Thou shall hev a bloater when the boat comes in.

I like a drop mysel',
When I can get it sly,
And thou, my bonny bairn,
Will lik't as well as I.

Chorus
Dance ti' thy daddy, sing ti' thy mammy,
Dance ti' thy daddy, ti' thy mammy sing;
Thou shall hev a fishy on a little dishy,
Thou shall hev a mackerel when the boat comes in.

May we get a drop,
Oft as we stand in need;
And weel may the keel row
That brings the bairns their bread.

Chorus
Dance ti' thy daddy, sing ti' thy mammy,
Dance ti' thy daddy, ti' thy mammy sing;
Thou shall hev a fishy on a little dishy,
Thou shall hev a salmon when the boat comes in.

Well I enjoyed the series no matter what it was called.
