Milosevic was perhaps a man created by a millenium of war. The country he was President of had been in an almost continual state of war for longer than many countries have been around in their current recognized forms. Muslims invading then being driven out and then back in,Austro-Hungarians invading then being driven out and Germany invading etc etc etc.
The mindset of a people that have such a history isn`t one that many peoples from other countries can understand, certainly Americans with their advanced military technology couldn`t begin to really understand what it`s like to be invaded and have to live under a regime that is alien and brutal [and I hope they never come to understand]. Australians [well with the exception of our poor Aboriginals] would also find it hard to grasp the concept of living in a country that has been under occupation for years as we have no borders with other countries. Perhaps whilst condemning the actions of Milosevic Europeans are the only ones that could understand why he took those various actions.
Putting someone on trial for War Crimes is in many ways a luxury, not to say that gathering evidence from victims and their families is a pleasant thing to undertake, but that it is only the winners that have the luxury sentencing the losers, those leaders with the biggest armies, political clout and the most powerful weapons are the only ones allowed to pass judgement.
Milosevic was probably guilty of much he was charged with but was he the only guilty party? Who should be charged with
the deaths of the men, women , children and babies found here? Clinton, as commander of the forces that killed the innocent? Or do such things happen in war and that is just the way of the world?
It`s certainly not a perfect world but with Milosevic dead perhaps it`s just a little bit better. There are certainly others that are as guilty who will never see the inside of a courtroom.
