Hi,

What I'm asking is a bit strange but please bear with me !

Actually, I am writing a novel which is based in Brazil. However, I am on the lookout for a city which will be the headquarters of my villains. Can anyone suggest such a city in Brazil ? I'd like to have city which is relatively unknown unlike Brasila and Rio De Janiero. Come of think of it, I think I'd like a city like Bedford in England which is relatively not that known (no disrespect meant to any people living in Bedordshire, please !)

Can anyone help me ?

Angi

No idea Angi... but how about a signed copy of the first edition for an old friend? Good luck!

Try Manaus on the Amazon. Or Cordoba I think near the borders of bolivia and paraguay, it's got a dodgy reputation already.

Or how about Arapiraca in the state of Alagoas on Brazil's Atlantic coast? Arapiraca's population is only about 20% more than that of Bedford, England. It is also known as the 'Tobacco Capital of Brazil" which could provide an interesting side aspect for your novel!

Tha Brazilian state of Espirito Santo [great sounding name to begin with I think] has a large city named Vila Velha that sounds like a great place for villains to live. The capital of Espirito Santo is Vitoria.

Or what about a fictional city? You can carve it out of your imagination to meet any criteria you need.

Manaus is world famous - a city in the jungle with a grandiose opera house ...

If writing a novel I'd go along with Jar and create your own fictitious town. If you choose a town or city that actually exists _and_ get any detail wrong, some readers may kick up an enormous fuss. If I read a Brazlian novel, set in Norwich, in translation and details were inaccurate I would find it very irritating and distracting and I'd assume (perhaps unfairly) that the author hadn't done his/her homework properly on the rest of the book, either.

Here's a link to the Manaus Opera House:

Olinda was a very pretty hillside town when we took a day trip there about 15 years ago. see http://www.ladatco.com/BR-Olinda-Gate.htm or better yet try http://www.bahia-online.net/ for Salvador Bahia for a hint of the sinister.

Gee Angi, any chance that you'll ever slow down and live life like a normal kid? Just kidding.

Good idea on the novel.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. After a lot of thinking, I've finally decided on Jar and bloomsby's suggestions - to make my own city. I'm sorry if I wasted anyone's time, but rest assured, if I need to take the story to somewhere else, I will always consider your suggestions.

Thanks for all your good wishes, all. I'm just writing the story as a hobby and I'm really not harbouring any hopes of it being published as it's just a bit of time-pass ! It started when I was bored in school and after my friends encouraged me to write it further, I'm just going on. Also this story is giving me immense satisfication and I really like writing it.
