I am a great fan of 'who dunnits' and depending on my mood, have been known to peek at the last chapter in order to find out who it was! It doesn't spoil my enjoyment to know the name of the murderer, and I don't do it too often.

Does anyone else cheat?

I do. It's one of those things I swear I won't do but then I do it anyway *sigh*. Of course, I also then swear I'll never do it again. What a self-defeating cycle !

Only if I am not really enjoying the book, and don't really want to bother reading the whole thing. I'll peek to see if my guess is correct.
I used to have a very bad habit of reading ahead - my glance would fall on the bottom of the right hand page when I turned the page, and I would start reading from there, rather than at the top of the left hand page. Then I'd have to go back and read the parts I missed. I've finally trained myself out of that, and don't want to start any more bad habits!

I do too! Not as often with "who done it's" - sometimes it doesn't help me anyway! But with the Harry Potter books I Have to skim through the last few pages just to prepare myself for any major deaths And I get this funny feeling that when the last book is released, I am going to get a extra nasty shock!

I do it too, from time to time, but not until I have a pretty good idea who I think did it. Then I can't wait to check and see if I'm right!

I find that if things start to go badly for a character I especially like...sometimes to re - assure myself, I flip to the back of the book.
I did that with Little Women when Beth started to get really sick [ I was about nine.]

The majority of my reading for pleasure falls into the "who-dunnit" category, and I guess I am in the minority, since I NEVER ever ever look ahead! But of course, I'm the type who never tries to find out what I'm getting for a present, or about anything that's supposed to be a surprise, because I love surprises. I don't often re-read books or re-watch movies, because the enjoyment for me is the suspense of the plot unfolding! If I know what's going to happen it totally ruins it for me.

I'm with you, cinnam0n. I like the anticipation and surprise. Delayed gratification and all that.
I am, however, a frequent re-reader/re-watcher. Once I know the ending, it becomes more about the journey and I can enjoy the subtleties.

I agree with both y'all. I do both of these things frequently. I'm especially prone to checking the last chapter if it's an Agatha Christy. She's so good about little things being very important that I can never figure it out before the main charicter, so I peek. *slaps hand, mutters "bad Becca!"*

Sometimes when there is an appendix at the end or something, I will slip a peek at the last page, see a name or word, and wonder the rest of the book what revelation it is meant to represent. Then once I get to the end, it's often a disappointment, but not always. I often prevent myself myself from looking at the end, but I do do what agony mentioned, look a paragraph or two ahead and then have to read what was in between. Sometimes things get too exciting not to!

I look at the charts in the end as I'm reading some pretty complicated series in terms of time frames. Or they have genealogical charts for the characters.
That's the only time.

No never - i just cant do it even if its a rubbish book, i have to plough through to find out whats going on. When i start a new book most of the time i dont even like reading the outer back page (or inner front page if its hard back) to find out what its all about. I just skim the front page and see if it seems interesting - it doesnt always work though!

No, I couldn't do that. It would ruin the enjoyment of the book for me and discourage me from reading further, since there wouldn't be much point.

Sometimes when I'm reading a riveting book I have to stop my glance from falling ahead, since I'm so eager to find out what's going to happen. This especially happens when I'm reading a new Harry Potter book and I'm nearing the end of a chapter. I often cover up the last part with my hand or bookmark, so I don't accidentally see what's written.

As cinnam0n mentioned, I also love surprises.

I'm a very erratic reader in that I often read the last chapter, middle chapters, skip a few pages and then go back to where I was! Though I usually only resort to this sort of faffing around if I'm struggling to get into the book. If it's a gripping, page turning read then I do my best to resist peeking at the last chapter.

I peek at at the last chapter when the book is long and I don't have time to finished it. If I don't I won't be able to concentrate on what I'm supposed to be doing, my mind keep going back to what I was reading, and try to figure out what is going to happen.

I NEVER do it. I just hate it. If it totally sucks, I'll just stop reading it. The same thing happens to me with movies. I don't want to know the ending even if I'm bored to death. I'd rather not see the movie than be told the ending.

This is one of my biggest temptations! At least if it's a good book. I do it ALL the time, but I usually end up making my suspense worse because then I want to know how the characters got to that point and why things happened that way (That's what I get for peeking!)

I do it, too. Not always, but if I've had a sudden epiphany about who dunnit then I do like to see if I'm right. Sometimes I try to fight the urge, but I never win.

I always read the last few pages (or sometimes half the last chapter) before buying a book. I don't like vague or very depressing endings, so I check ahead and get the gist of the ending before investing in the book.

this was something I had never even considered- no, really!- til a roommate told me she had always read the last page before she started a book.
I was appalled, and told her so. Said I couldn't believe anyone could enjoy a book, knowing the ending. Very self-righteous.
And then......you guessed it. Picked up the bad habit. In self defense, I confine myself to the last few sentences, and feel GREATLY relieved when they make no sense to me, and don't give anything important away.
I really don't know why I do this. Guess I need therapy.
Shelly
