Sir John Gielgud, a giant of the
British theater, and a renown
presence in many, many films and BBC
tv productions, has died at the age
of 96.Remarkably, Gielgud seems never
to have retired--he continued to
appear regularly in films and tv, and
his work seemed better and better
with each performance.
I saw Gielgud in live performance
only once--in a Broadway production
of Harold Pinter's, "No Man's
Land"--and it was one of the most
stunningly exquisite performances I
have ever seen.I also saw the
marvelous production of "Hamlet"
(starring Richard Burton) which
Gielgud directed.
Gielgud was one of my very favorite
actors.I think he was just a marvel.I
loved every movie he was in--his
presence in a film was enough to
elevate any material to a high plane.
But,one of my very favorite Gielgud
performances was his role in
"Arthur", where he displayed such
unexpected comedic talents.This
quintessentially dignified man was
able to bowl me over with laughter
when he looked at Dudley Moore and
said simply, "You little s--t."
There are not many actors of this
caliber left.Thank heavens Gielgud's
films remain for us to enjoy and
appreciate.
Do you have a favorite John Gielgud
film or performance?
{I apologize for the misspelling of his name in the title of this topic--unfortunate, titles can't be edited)
