There are several remix and tribute albums out there dedicated to remakes of great rock songs. I've collected several over the years - which include techno, industrial, classical, etc.

I'm of a mind that a cover song can NEVER be "better" than the original, simply because the premise/foundation is established by the original song that is remade. At the same time, some unique covers can really kick [censored]!

Here are 5 of my favourites:

Van Halen's "So This Is Love", by Jeff Scott Soto & Blues Saraceno with Sheep On Drugs

Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Maker", by Phil Lewis, remixed by Sheep On Drugs

Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze", by The Cure

U2's "Numb", by Die Krupps

Queen's "Tie Your Mother Down", Die Krupps Remix with Lemmy & Ted Nugent

What are some of your favourites?

Rolling Stones "Wild Horses", by the Sundays

The Commodores "Easy", by Faith No More

Joni Mitchel's "River", by Indigo Girls

..are a few of my personal favs. Nothing does, however, come close to the original but it is fun to see a song gain new respect when dusted off and heard anew.

The best I have heard recently is a tribute to Floyds Dark side, its called "Dub side of the moon" and is performed by the "easy dub all stars". It really is a fantastic record

Some of my favorites:

"Who Do You Love" by Quicksilver Messenger Service (originally Bo Diddley but this one has been covered by just about everyone, though QSM's is my favorite, "Gimme Shelter" by Ashley Cleveland (originally Rolling Stones), and "Dancing Days" by Stone Temple Pilots (originally Led Zepplin).

Another one I just thought of was Nine Inch Nail's version of "This town ain't big enough for both of us", originally by Sparks.

The June/July 2005 issue of Believer magazine contained a fabulous cd of covers. The performers are mostly indie rock/indie folk covering other indie rock/indie folk songs (sometimes by the same artists also performing a cover tune). My favorites are the the covers done by Decemberists, Spoon and Devendra Banhart. The ish is still available and here's the track list:

1. The Decemberists: “Bridges & Balloons” by Joanna Newsom
2. Spoon: “Decora” by Yo La Tengo
3. The Constantines: “Why I Didn’t Like August 93” by Elevator to Hell
4. CocoRosie: “Ohio” by Damien Jurado
5. The Mountain Goats: “Pet Politics” by Silver Jews
6. San Serac: “Late Blues” by Ida
7. The Shins: “We Will Become Silhouettes” by the Postal Service
8. Josephine Foster: “The Golden Window” by the Cherry Blossoms
9. Cynthia G. Mason: “Surprise, AZ” by Richard Buckner
10. Jim Guthrie: “Nighttime/Anytime (it’s alright)” by the Constantines
11. Espers: “Firefly Refrain” by Fursaxa
12. Two Gallants: “Anna’s Sweater” by Blear
13. Vetiver: “Be Kind to Me” by Michael Hurley
14. Ida: “My Fair, My Dark” by David Schickele
15. Mount Eerie: “Waterfalls” by Thanksgiving
16. Devendra Banhart: “Fistful of Love” by Antony & The Johnsons
17. Wolf Parade: “Claxxon’s Lament” by Frog Eye

I normally hate anyone doing any Beatles' song or I shouldn't say hate, jsut feel it pales in comparison.

Yet....I did love Fiona Apple's version of ACROSS THE UNIVERSE

A very nice album of all Beatles covers was released earlier this year. "This Bird Has Flown: 40th Anniversary Tribute to Rubber Soul" can't match the Beatles album, of course, but it's still a great listen and hopefully will direct more folks to the original album via their favorite contemporary artists below.

1. Drive My Car - The Donnas
2. Norwegian Wood - The Fiery Furnaces
3. You Won't See Me - Dar Williams
4. Nowhere Man - Low
5. Think For Yourself - Yonder Mountain String Band
6. The Word - Mindy Smith
7. Michelle - Ben Harper
8. What Goes On - Sufjan Stevens
9. Girl - Rhett Miller
10. I'm Looking Through You - Ted Leo
11. In My Life - Ben Lee
12. Wait - Ben Kweller
13. If I Needed Someone - Nellie McKay
14. Run For Your Life - Cowboy Junkies

I was surprised that I liked "Land of Confusion" by Disturbed originally by Genesis.
