It was very good. I do admit that I enjoy war/battle stories, but I thought this one was exceptional. The thrill and action they managed to put into something based on truth is amazing. I was also pleasantly surprised to see so many familiar faces on the screen.

I would have to agree. It was a really good plot.I also enjoy battle stories, unless they are really predictable from just after the start eg. Rambo etc.
The realistic ones are the best.

This is entertainment after all, not History.
I go to the movies to be entertained for 90 minutes or so. The suspension of disbelief is
needed to enjoy a movie. Why go if you are only going to find fault with it. Was it put
forward as a factual movie? No-one complained that aliens have never blown up the White House. Or that Superman never saved anyone from a falling elevator on the Eiffel Tower.

This movie was in always an entertaining film, I must say. But, the things that I didn't like about this film was the bad screenplay and the way it tried to become a classic submarine movie. I haven't seen to many submarine movies, but I will say that U-571 was much better than Crimson Tide with Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman. I'd give it just about 3 out of 4 stars. If you liked this movie then you would most likely like the recently released "Rules of Engagment" with Samuel L. Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones.

The difficulty is that quite a lot of American movies have been made, that portray Americans as having done this or that when the reality is often different.

This has even extended to newsreels and documentaries. I saw a WW2 doco made by the US Army featuring the Battle of Wau in PNG. It had battle scenes of American troops taking a town they said was Wau. The only trouble was that no American troops were ever involved in that battle. This type of thing leads to great resentment and justifiably so.

I have heard that an American studio is intending to remake the Colditz Story with Americans as the lead players. I can understand that they may wish to do this for commercial reasons but that does detract from the truth. In Colditz for example there were at the end of the war only 8 American POW's.

With U571 the entire story has been distorted. At the time the first Enigma machine was captured by the Royal Navy the US was not even in the war. The codes were cracked entirely by people from Bletchingly Park.

Just as a footnote the real U571 was sunk by a Royal Australian Air Force crew flying a Sunderland.

I warn you "DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE"
unless you want 90mins of Matthew Maconnawhatever and his cronies staring at the ceiling of their sub. That's it - That's all they do. What a boring movie -Harvey Keitel is so badly cast as the C.O.B in this movie. *yawn* BORING!!!

There's been a lot of controversy in the UK over the way that Americans have hijacked what was a decisive military achievement, and some papers have even gone as far as to call for a boycott of the film.

I went to see it when it first came out, and actually really enjoyed the film - and at least they were decent enough to give the proper version of events as a caption at the end of the film.

Having said that though, my Grandfather was a dambuster, and I think I would be really annoyed if they made a film claiming that was the sole work of the Americans.

I just went to see this movie a few weeks ago, and I have to tell you something that only someone who has seen the movie could appreciate. Remember when the submarine was diving deeper and deeper to avoid the depth charges? Right around the time when one exploded, it started raining outside. I was the only one in the theater, and a earsplitting thunder BOOM! shook the building...for a minute there, I thought "Wow! These new sound systems are great!"...LOL And I did like the movie as entertainment, whether historically accurate or not...
