Once there was a farmer who was taking apples to town for sale at a local market. On the way to town, he had to pay four tolls. Each toll cost one-half his apples plus half an apple. After paying all four tolls, the farmer arrived in town with no apples left to sell. How many apples did the farmer start with?

I am a little confused, if you KNOW the answer and are testing people, this isn't the correct forum, it should be posted in Challenges. If you don't know the answer and are asking for one then people who know it ought to be posting the answer in this thread.
