Let's say I'm in the mood for something sweet and dreamy. Something with a lot of romance (not sex - I mean romance) that really gets at the heart.

What would you suggest I rent/see? It could even be something classic - "It Happened One Night" is certainly a great choice.

I have a hard time finding something in my video store that appeals to the romantic in me. Most often, I'm not looking for action-packed or thrillers. I'm typically more in the mood for something sweet.

There is one coming out with Richard Geere and Wynona Rider, forget what it's called though. This is what I can gather from the commercials. They meet, fall in love, etc. She has an illness that is affecting her health more and more each day, and all she wants is to be able to be with him forever.

Oh! I did see the commercial for that one, too. Looks like a tear-jerker. I'll have to check that one out.

Dave

Man in the Moon (with Reese Witherspoon and a London twin) not the Jim Carrey movie.

Flirting (an Aussie movie with Thandy Newton and Nicole Kidman)

Love Story

The Other Side of the Mountain

Casablanca

Fire with Fire

Linda, In my sleepiness last night I forgot the end all- be all of all romantic comedies...Crossing Delancey. There is no finer film. Stars Amy Irving and Peter Reigert. Most wonderful of all.

Also realized I should add:

Singles

Bed of Roses

Out of Africa

that movie with Marisa Tomei and Christian Slater...all I can ever remember is the original title was "baboon heart" but they changed it...

This one is not out on video yet...but when it comes out go rent Hi Fidelity. Excellent.

Also for laughs and love Grosse Point Blank.

All right, I'm stopping now....I have seen way too many movies.

It was not a big box office success but I enjoyed the remake of Sabrina, with Harrison Ford, Julia Ormond and Greg Kinnear. (Of course, I'm a little partial to Harrison Ford!)

Linda-- while it's not out on video yet, if you're still in the mood when it gets there, I cannot recommend Return to Me highly enough. Absolutely wonderful movie, will certainly be on my top 10 list for this year.

I'd recommend two old foreign films you might not have seen:

"The Umbrellas of Cherbourg"

French--Stars a very young Catherine Deneuve.Has an absolutely exquisite score by Michel LeGrande. The entire movie is sung, rather than spoken.

And, if you want a sad (heartbreaking) love story --guaranteed to give you a good cry:

"Elvira Madigan"

Danish film. This one has been running on some of the cable channels during the past few weeks. So, you might catch it on TV.

And I love:

"Love Story" (Ali McGraw and Ryan O'Neal).

"Love With A Proper Stranger" (Natalie Wood and Steve McQueen).

"The Way We Were" (Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford).

"The Bridges of Madison County"(Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood).

"An Officer and a Gentleman" (Debra Winger and Richard Gere)

"The French Lieutenant's Woman" (Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons).

"Now Voyager" (Bette Davis and Paul Henreid).

And almost any old movie with Charles Boyer or Leslie Howard--particularly if it also starred Ingrid Bergman.
"Intermezzo" with Howard and Bergman is just great.

As usual Xterminal and I are totally in agreement...I saw Return to Me in the theaters too and really loved it. Very good.

How could I have left off Notting Hill? Wonderful movie!

By the way I HATED Runaway Bride. I just hated it. Richard Gere really annoys me when he's trying to play light and sweet. He only has one facial expression and it looks so forced. All squinty eyes and teeth.

The new movie with him and Winona Ryder (Autumn in NY?) looks like one I'll pass on only because I can't get past the fact that he's old enough to be her father and she is so waifish that no matter how old she is, I can only see her as very very young.

A friend of mine says to see the Story of Us. I never saw it, but she loved it.

Gee, I'm going to have to print this list out and have it with me at the movie place. These are great - lots of wonderful choices!

Can I join that movie-watching party? I'll bring something yummy, I promise!

I love foreign films. Have had some good luck with them.

That settles it - we're going to have to have a week long girl party. We'll have to rent every one of these movies, pig out on all kinds of wonderful delicacies, giggle and do all the "slumber party" things. (Hey, if anyone tries to put my bra in the freezer, they're in a lot of trouble - I'm warning you now!)

Sounds like a great idea Linda.

If you like foreign films we must also get Life is beautiful.

And I say no bras all week anyway.
Just lots of girl talk, baby doll pyjamas, make up and yummy food and wine.

I'll bring some more tissues as well...I think Chels might have some sad stories to tell us when when we get some wine into her.

Come on over, auschic--I'm warming up the VCR.I also liked the two films you mentioned very much.Shirley Valenine has suddenly began popping up on cable in the past few weeks and I want to watch it again.I am crazy about foreign films.Should I bring the French classic:

A Man And A Woman

Of course you can come, Linda1.A marathon movie party sounds great.I won't hide your bra in the freezer---but I can't answer for auschic.I think the three of us would have a ball.

And just to provide some relief from all the three hanky romances I mentioned on my list above, I might bring along "Pretty Woman" and "Moonstruck". Although I think auschic has me pegged correctly--I love a good cry.

If we want wonderful romance at our Chick Flick party, we must include:

An Affair to Remember
(Deborah Kerr & Cary Grant)

Ryan's Daughter
(Sarah Miles & Robert Mitchum)

Summertime
(Katherine Hepburn & Rossano
Brazzi)

Up Close and Personal
(Michelle Pfeiffer & Robert
Redford)

And, just because they are great Chick Flicks with a lot of romance, we should include:

Terms of Endearment

Hannah and Her Sisters

When Harry Met Sally

As Good As It Gets

Ghost

You've Got Mail

Swinging Doors

And, we should set an entire night aside just for Audrey Hepburn films, like:

Sabrina

Roman Holiday

Charade

Breakfast At Tiffanys

I can't wait for this party to get underway! What are you waiting for, girls, round up the videos!

I'm here Chelseabelle.
I'm opening the wine and putting the munchies in a bowl for us to share.

Who knows...I may even spill the beans about the latest ICQ adventures...lol

Which movie should we watch first?
I like all of your choices....we seem to have the same taste.

Glass of wine for you too Linda?

I'm all set, auschic.Maybe we should let Linda1 pick the first film since it's her topic. While we are waiting for her, you can pour me another glass of wine.
I love Australian movies--but I don't know that I've seen any romantic Australian films--are there any?

I've got plenty of tissues on hand--we'll need them for some of these movies.

The Danish film I mentioned, "Elvira Madigan" will be on the FLIX cable channel tomorrow (Tuesday 8/8).It's on in the early morning and again in the early evening. Some of you might want to tape it.It's a beautiful movie and love story, but as sad as hell--you need an entire box of kleenex for ths one.

Has anyone mentioned Steel Magnolias yet? I donīt know if Iīd classify it as a romance, but itīs definitely up there as a tear-jerker! Also, another "chick flick".... Thelma and Louise. Brad Pitt looked so darn cute in that!

I can not believe that out of all those movies you girls listed you have left out what I consider one of the best love story movies ever. maybe a man has different tastes. Of course when I search for a movie to watch, I don't look for the romantic ones. The movie I am talking about is "Somewhere in Time" with Christopher Reeves. If you haven't seen it, I would suggest you renting it and viewing it. I do have a copy of this one in my collection. Love it.
