Cadbury's, the chocolate manufacturer, is removing more than 1,000,000 bars of chocolate from shop shelves, to be destroyed. It is feared that there is a small chance of the products being infected with samonella.

What a terrible waste, I could weep.

That's terrible Sue! Destroying all that chocolate. But, then again, we can't have people getting sick if it is infected. The question is--how would they be infected, and who wasn't paying enough attention to be careful with the chocolate? Surely, it is someone's job to keep this from happening-then we do all make mistakes.

Tiffany

btw, I'm with you, I could cry

I would GLADLY volunteer to test the chocolate! Though I don't think that my husband would like the outcome...lol

Seeing as how eating chocolate causes me to have sneezing fits, this could be considered a public service to we scatterd "sneezers".
OK, maybe not ....

Having been in the food service industry for over five years, I don't see how chocolate can have salmonella without having eggs in it.

Salmonella does not just grow in eggs Dave. The easiest was for it to spread into the chocolate would be for the chocoalte to have been handled by someone who was infected with salmonella. It is terribly contagious.

The contamination was caused by a leaking pipe at Cadbury's Marlbrook plant, near Leominster, Herefordshire.

The leak was discovered in January with samples sent to an independent laboratory where a rare strain of salmonella was identified.

It is still a horrible waste of all that lovely chocolate.

There is an upside to this story. Due to all the publicity over the problem, sales of Cadbury's chocolate must have taken a downturn (mind you it would take more than a very, very slight chance of salmonella to stop me eating the stuff!) so in order to boost sales some shops are offering large bars of the stuff at half price! Yum, yum.

Cadbury Royal Dark Chocolate is not only luscious, it is good for your heart. I personally try to consume some daily--purely for medicinal purposes.

I am a fan of the milk chocolate as well (although, sadly, that does lack the heart-protecting properties of the dark chocolate), although I understand that the milk chocolate version sold in the U.S. differs from that in the UK. I think ours is somewhat sweeter. I much prefer it to the other makes.

I hope they do not show any video of the chocolate being destroyed. It would be too horribly painful to watch.

Hmmm...I never realized you can get salmonella from chocolate. Is nothing sacred any more?
