TRT, the state run Turkish TV company, has banned the cartoon 'Winnie the Pooh' from broadcast, because of the character Piglet, whom they claim is offensive to Moslems.
Turkey is trying to become a member of the European Economic Union, and many Europeans have expressed grave reservations about the affect this large Moslem country would have on European identity and culture. As a condition of entry to the EEC, Turkey would have to accept all the conditions of freedom of speech, freedom of religion, human rights, etc, which are enshrined in European law. Banning a popular children's cartoon does not send out a good impression of Turkey's willingness to accept such conditions, and it may be that Piglet will have more effect in keeping Turkey out of the EEC than all the representations and petitions have been able to achieve!
Maybe someone could even make a movie on this affair, entitled 'Piglet to the Rescue'!
